MILWAUKEE -- Domingo Santana hit his first career grand slam and Jimmy Nelson struck out 10 as the Milwaukee Brewers salvaged a series split with a 9-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday afternoon at Miller Park.
Nelson (3-3) allowed seven hits for the second consecutive outing but held Arizona to a run over seven innings of work.
Brandon Drury had three hits while Daniel Descalso, David Peralta and Nick Ahmed notched two each for the Diamondbacks, who were 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left seven stranded.
The Brewers' offense provided an early cushion, scoring two in the first inning off Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin (4-5), who gave up seven runs on 10 hits and three walks with three strikeouts but couldn't get out of the fifth inning.
Corbin gave up back-to-back singles to open the fourth and after Nelson moved the runners over, he walked Keon Broxton to load the bases.
Santana made him pay, driving a 1-0 change up to center, giving Milwaukee a 6-1 lead.
Insurance runs in the fifth and sixth made it an 8-1 game when Oliver Drake took over for Nelson in the eighth but he failed to retire a batter as the Diamondbacks cut the deficit to three with a four-run inning.
Milwaukee needed three pitchers to get through the frame but got a run back in the bottom of the eighth when Santana doubled and scored on Travis Shaw's ground-rule double.
Jacob Barnes retired pinch hitter Paul Goldschmidt to get Milwaukee out of the eighth came back and worked a perfect ninth for his second save.
