NEW YORK -- Rookie Jordan Montgomery pitched a career-high seven innings and Aaron Hicks homered in consecutive at-bats to lead the New York Yankees to an 8-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Friday night.
Montgomery (4-4) won his second straight start since laboring through 4 1/3 innings and throwing 98 pitches May 29 at Baltimore. He followed up six scoreless innings in Toronto last Saturday by allowing two runs and five hits.
It was the fourth time he pitched into the seventh but the first time he completed the inning since Aug. 20 for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at Pawtucket.
Montgomery set a career high with eight strikeouts and issued one walk. He threw 94 pitches and pitched quickly after allowing both runs in the second.
The left-hander allowed a two-run homer to Jonathan Schoop but with two on in the second, he began a stretch in which he retired 17 of the final 18 hitters.
Hicks turned in the 10th multi-homer game by the Yankees, matching their total from last season. He hit a solo shot off Dylan Bundy (6-5) into the "Judge's Chambers" section in right field to start the sixth and added a two-run drive into the second deck in right with two outs in the seventh off Edwin Jackson.
After Hicks recorded his third career multi-homer game, Starlin Castro went deep, Chase Headley lifted a sacrifice fly and Matt Holliday hit a run-scoring double.
Austin Romine added the final runs with a two-run single in the eighth.
Bundy was unable to beat the Yankees for the second time in three starts as he allowed three runs and five hits in six innings.
The Orioles did not get a hit after Ruben Tejada opened the fifth with a double and lost for the 12th time in 18 games.
The Orioles took a 2-0 lead with none out in the second inning. Following a walk to Chris Davis, Schoop deposited an 0-1 changeup into the first row of the left-center field bleachers.
Montgomery gave up two more hits in the second after Schoop's 11th home run but got out of it by retiring Joey Rickard and Trey Mancini.
The Yankees answered quickly and tied the game when Castro hit a 2-0 fastball into the center field seats and Headley lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right field.
