ST. LOUIS -- Chase Anderson's pitching and Stephen Vogt's hitting kept the Milwaukee Brewers in playoff contention for at least one more day.
Anderson worked into the eighth inning and Vogt knocked in three runs Friday night as Milwaukee knocked off the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 in Busch Stadium.
Anderson (12-4) gave up only three hits and a run in seven-plus innings, walking one and fanning five.
Vogt was 2-for-4 for the Brewers (85-75), delivering their first three runs. The third, a groundout to second base in the sixth, scored Travis Shaw for a 3-1 lead.
Orlando Arcia's fielder's choice bouncer to short with the infield in plated Domingo Santana, who beat a hurried throw home to cap the two-run rally that gave Milwaukee a 4-1 advantage.
Eric Thames added an RBI single in the ninth as the Brewers remained two games behind Colorado for the National League's second wild-card spot.
John Gant (0-1) permitted seven hits and four runs in five-plus innings for St. Louis (82-78), walking three and striking out three.
Jose Martinez clouted a two-run homer in the ninth for the Cardinals, his 14th home run of the year.
Milwaukee initiated the scoring in the top of the second inning with three straight singles. The last, a blooper to short left by Vogt, scored Shaw from second base.
Vogt's next at-bat two innings later produced a much more emphatic hit. He drove a 1-2 pitch from Gant into the St. Louis bullpen in right-center field for his 12th homer and a 2-0 Brewers lead.
The Cardinals sliced the deficit in half as Paul DeJong hit one where he couldn't be denied. DeJong, who was robbed of a game-tying homer in the 11th inning on Thursday night as the Chicago Cubs eliminated St. Louis from playoff contention, blasted a 403-foot homer to left-center field.
It was the 25th of the year with the Cardinals for DeJong, who also had 13 in Triple-A before he was called up in mid-June.
