Jon Gray allowed three hits in eight strong innings, David Dahl homered, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-1 in Denver on Monday night.
Ian Desmond went 3-for-3 and Nolan Arenado had two hits and drove in two runs to help the struggling Rockies get a rare win over Los Angeles. Colorado is now 3-8 against the Dodgers this season.
Cody Bellinger had two hits and Will Smith had a double and scored the lone run for the Dodgers.
The Rockies came into Monday's game having lost 17 of 22 in July heading into the three-game series against the Dodgers. Gray (10-7), who left his previous start after taking a line drive off his right calf, turned in one of his best starts of the season.
He struck out six and walked three while tossing a season-high 112 pitches. His only blemish was a leadoff double in the eighth inning by Smith, who eventually scored on a groundout by Joc Pederson.
Gray helped his own cause in a five-run fifth inning. Tony Wolters led off with a single against starter Kenta Maeda (7-8), and Gray drew a walk. Dahl drove in the first run with a bloop single and Trevor Story reached on an error to load the bases.
Arenado followed with a two-run single and Ryan McMahon later hit a two-run double to make it 6-0, chasing Maeda. The right-hander allowed six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits in four-plus innings. He struck out five.
After the Dodgers spoiled the shutout in the eighth, the Rockies padded their lead in the bottom of the inning. Yonder Alonso walked with one out and Dahl hit his 15th home run of the season to the second deck off reliever Josh Sborz.
One out later, Arenado singled to right and scored on Daniel Murphy's double that made it 9-1.
Colorado scored its first run of the game in the second inning, when Desmond tripled with one out and scored on Raimel Tapia's single. Desmond finished a home run shy of the cycle and also had a walk in four at-bats.
