Michael Hermosillo scored the tiebreaking run on a throwing error by reliever Adam Ottavino in the sixth inning, and the visiting Los Angeles Angels prevented the New York Yankees from clinching the American League East with a 3-2 victory Wednesday night.
The Yankees (99-54) needed a win or a loss by Tampa Bay to clinch their first division title since 2012. Later Wednesday, the visiting Rays beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-7 to keep the AL East race alive for at least one more day.
New York was sloppy in the sixth inning as the Angels went ahead 3-2. After Hermosillo doubled, Yankees first baseman Luke Voit allowed a ball by Matt Thaiss to deflect off his glove and then did not cover first on a grounder by David Fletcher that loaded the bases.
After Ottavino (6-5) got the first out, Albert Pujols hit a slow grounder in front of the mound. Ottavino fielded it but threw the ball well over catcher Kyle Higashioka's head as the Angels went ahead.
Pujols and Kevan Smith had RBI singles off CC Sabathia in the third as the Angels (69-83) won for only the 15th time in their past 49 games.
Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer for the Yankees, who saw Giancarlo Stanton return from his second lengthy injured-list stint and Sabathia make his final regular-season home start.
After missing 73 games due to a right knee sprain, Stanton hit a double in the second inning and went 1-for-3 before being lifted after the sixth.
Sabathia allowed two runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out four, walked two and threw 62 pitches.
Sabathia exited to a nice ovation after retiring Brian Goodwin. His teammates spilled onto the field, and the first person he hugged was injured reliever Dellin Betances. After embracing teammates and getting a hand from both teams, he tipped his cap to the crowd and acknowledged his family.
Los Angeles left-hander Dillon Peters allowed two runs on five hits in four innings. He walked two and fanned two. Luke Bard (2-2) followed with three hitless, scoreless innings, racking up five strikeouts without issuing a walk.
Ty Buttrey pitched a hitless eighth for the Angels, and Hansel Robles converted his 22nd save in 25 chances by striking out Gio Urshela with the tying run on first.
