San Francisco @ Arizona preview

Chase Field

Last Meeting ( Sep 23, 2011 ) San Francisco 1, Arizona 3

THE STORY: The Arizona Diamondbacks may have already clinched the National League West, but they still have another goal in their sights. Arizona enters Saturday's matchup against the San Francisco Giants trailing the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers by one game for home-field advantage in the NL Division Series. The Giants, who have lost three of four, have the slimmest of playoff hopes as they trail Atlanta by five games in the wild-card race with five games remaining.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN (Arizona)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Eric Surkamp (2-0, 2.95 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Ian Kennedy (20-4, 2.88 ERA).

Surkamp, who will be making just his fifth career start. The 24-year-old rookie allowed one run and three hits at Colorado on Saturday but lasted only 4 2/3 innings thanks to six walks. Surkamp did not yield more than three runs in any of his previous four outings.

Kennedy, who is tied with Los Angeles' Clayton Kershaw, looks to become the NL leader in wins while continuing his dominance against the West. The 26-year old is 9-0 against division opponents this season and has won 12 of his last 13 decisions overall, including a triumph over Pittsburgh on Monday in which he allowed one hit and struck out 12 over eight innings. Kennedy, who is 10-2 at home this year, has posted a 2-0 record and 0.87 ERA in four meetings with the Giants this season.

ABOUT THE GIANTS (84-73): The seasons of Sanchez and Nate Schierholtz are over as both have been shut down due to injury. Sanchez, who has a sprained right ankle, last pitched on Aug. 16 at Atlanta. He went 4-7 with a 4.26 ERA in 19 starts this year. Schierholtz has not seen action since Aug. 21 because of a broken right foot. He batted .278 with nine home runs and 41 RBIs in 115 games.

ABOUT THE DIAMONDBACKS (91-66): J.J. Putz set a franchise record Friday with his 23rd consecutive save. Putz eclipsed the mark set from June 13-Sept. 22, 1998 by Gregg Olson. Friday's win was Arizona's major league-leading 46th comeback victory of the season, also a franchise record. The Diamondbacks added a left-handed reliever Friday, acquiring Mike Zagurski from the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies for a player to be named or cash. Zagurski made four appearances with the Phillies this year and allowed two runs in 3 1/3 innings. He is 1-0 with a 6.82 ERA in 37 career games.

FINAL PITCH: Arizona is the eighth team in major-league history to win 90 games after losing at least 90 in each of the previous two seasons. The last team to accomplish the feat was the 2008 Tampa Bay Rays.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
