Tres Tinkle scored 26 points and made 5 of 7 3-pointers, leading Oregon State to an 81-76 win over in-state opponent Portland State on Sunday in Corvallis, Ore.
Tinkle added nine rebounds and seven assists, Ethan Thompson scored 18 points with six rebounds and six assists and Zach Reichle scored a career-high 16 points for the Beavers (7-1). Kylor Kelley blocked six shots for the Beavers, who have won five straight games.
Holland Woods recorded 23 points and seven rebounds for the Vikings (3-5) of the Big Sky Conference. Portland State hung tough despite trailing by 19 points three times during the second half, the last time being at the 11:54 mark of the second half.
Portland State was without injured center Sal Nuhu, who's missed four games with an ankle sprain, and starting forward Alonzo Walker due to a heel injury. The two have combined for averages of 18 points and nearly 11 rebounds per game.
Matt Hauser added 13 points for the Vikings.
The Beavers couldn't completely pull away from the Vikings, who made it tight in the final minute. But Oregon State made 59.3 percent (16 of 27) of its shots in the second half.
The Vikings made it 80-76 on a short jumper from Woods with 19.7 seconds left, but Portland State ran out of time.
Thompson threw down a fast-break dunk at the 8:11 mark for a 25-18 Beavers' lead. The Beavers took their largest lead of the first half, 10 points at 32-22, after a pair of Alfred Hollins free throws with 4:38 to go.
Oregon State led 41-32 on a Tinkle 3-pointer and a Thompson free throw, and took a 41-34 lead into halftime.
The Beavers are 14-0 all time against Portland State and 10-0 at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.
