Jordan Ford scored 25 of his 32 points in the second half, and Malik Fitts scored a season high 28 points before fouling out late to lead Saint Mary's to an 89-77 win over California on Saturday night in Berkeley, Calif.
The Gaels (10-2) have won nine of 10 and rebounded from a loss to then-No. 19 Dayton last Sunday. They handed Cal its first loss at home this season.
Sophomore Andre Kelly led Cal with a career high 26 points. Matt Bradley added 14 points and five assists and Grant Anticevich scored 11 points.
The Golden Bears (6-5) have lost five of their last seven games after opening the season with four straight wins. Cal has lost three straight to West Coast Conference teams this month, having fallen to San Francisco and Santa Clara as well.
Cal led 10-2 early in the game, and 19-17 after a Paris Austin fastbreak layup with 9:19 to go in the first half. The Gaels responded with a 19-5 run to take a 36-24 lead, and Fitts' fifth 3-pointer of the half gave Saint Mary's its largest lead of the half. 17 points at 43-26 with 1:39 left.
Saint Mary's went up 19 points twice early in the second half before the Golden Bears rallied. A driving layup by Juhwan Harris-Dyson and two free throws by Kelly cut the Gaels' lead to 66-55 with 8:41 to go.
Cal made it an eight-point game wth 4:44 to play, but Ford hit a deep 3-pointer 17 seconds later to make it a 75-64 Saint Mary's lead.
After knocking down nine 3s in the first half, Ford's big shot was the only 3 for the Gaels in the second half. Saint Mary's out- rebounded Cal 33-22.
The Golden Bears were never able to get closer than eight points down in the closing minutes.
