Makale Foreman nailed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for his only points Sunday afternoon as California rallied to a 72-70 victory over San Francisco in Berkeley, Calif.
Seeking a fourth straight win, the Dons (5-3) did not trail until Foreman's heroics. The bucket capped a 6-0 Cal finish over the final 1:45 of the game.
Andre Kelly finished with a team-high 22 points for the Golden Bears (3-4), who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Kelly scored Cal's last seven points before Foreman's shot, which came after San Francisco star Jamaree Bouyea missed a free throw with 7 seconds left and the Dons clinging to a 70-69 lead.
Foreman had been 0-for-6 from the field, including 0-for-5 on 3-pointers, before sinking the winning attempt.
Bouyea led all scorers with 24 points and Khalil Shabazz added 21 for the Dons, who had beaten the Golden Bears in each of the last two seasons.
Leading 37-29 at intermission, the Dons led by as many as nine early in the second half before the Golden Bears began chipping away.
A 3-pointer by Ryan Betley got Cal within 48-46 with still 13:05 to play, and a layup by Kelly at the 12:01 mark trimmed the gap to 51-50.
The game remained tight until Shabazz put San Francisco up four with a 3-pointer with 1:45 left. But the Dons didn't score again, allowing the Golden Bears to draw close on a free throw and layup by Kelly before Foreman's game-winning basket.
Grant Anticevich had 18 points and Matt Bradley 17 for Cal, which won despite getting outscored 30-18 on 3-pointers.
Kelly and Anticevich shared game-high rebound honors with seven.
Julian Rishwain was a third Don with double-figure points. He had 11.
Shabazz nailed his first of four 3-pointers 40 seconds into the game, giving the Dons a lead they retained for more than 39 minutes. USF led by as many as 12 in the half before settling into a 37-29 advantage at the break.
