D'Shawn Schwartz scored a career-high 24 points and George Mason upset No. 20 Maryland 71-66 Wednesday night in College Park.
The Patriots (4-0) led by nine with seven minutes left before Maryland (3-1) rallied to within one late, but the hosts couldn't take the lead.
It was George Mason's first ever win against Maryland in 10 games.
DeVon Cooper had 16 points for George Mason and Davonte Gaines added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Schwartz pulled down nine rebounds.
Donta Scott had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Maryland, which was looking to jump out to a 4-0 start for the eighth consecutive season.
Eric Ayala had 17 points, including three 3-pointers during Maryland's late rally, and Julian Reese scored 12 points.
With Maryland trailing 59-50, Scott converted a three-point play and Reese hit 3-of-4 free throws to cut the lead to 59-56 with 4:34 left, but Cooper's basket followed by Schwartz's 3-pointer pushed the lead to 64-56 at the 3:06 mark.
Ayala hit two 3-pointers with the second one pulling the Terrapins within 65-63, but Josh Oduro's jumper made it 67-63.
Ayala struck again from long range and the Patriots' lead was 67-66 with 57 seconds left. Oduro made a layup and Ayala missed a contested 3-point attempt with 14 seconds remaining. Gaines made two free throws to make 71-66.
Both teams shot 45 percent from the field and made seven free throws, but the Patriots were better from beyond the arc, making 12-of-24 versus the Terrapins' 9-for-28 mark. George Mason outrebounded Maryland 36-30.
George Mason led by one at halftime before Schwartz's jumper at 13:04 capped a 16-7 run that gave the Patriots a 10-point lead, 48-38.
Xavier Green's fast-break layup pulled Maryland within 51-46 with 9:26 left, but Schwartz soon hit another three and Gaines knocked down two free throws to make it 56-48.
Blake Jones' corner 3-pointer pushed the lead to nine points with 7:03 remaining.
