Jordan Shepherd finished with 25 points and eight rebounds and Andre Kelly had 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead Cal to a 73-61 victory over Oregon State on Thursday at Berkeley, Calif., in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.
The Golden Bears (4-4, 1-0 Pac-12) also got 12 points from Grant Anticevich. Shepherd made 8 of 14 shots from the floor while Kelly was 8 of 11.
Cal sank 50 percent of its field-goal attempts and outrebounded Oregon State 42-24.
California was also 16-of-19 from the free throw line while Oregon State was 6 of 10.
The Beavers (1-7, 0-1) have a seven-game losing streak after reaching the Elite Eight last season.
Oregon State was led by Warith Alatishe's 21 points and eight rebounds and Dashawn Davis' 14 points.
Beavers forward Rodrigue Andela broke a bone in his left foot in practice this week and is out eight to 12 weeks. A starter in each of the team's past four games, he was averaging 4.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per contest.
Oregon State closed out the first half by outscoring California 14-2 in the last six minutes to cut the Golden Bears' lead to 34-33 at halftime.
California missed six shots from the field and committed three turnovers in that stretch.
Alatishe, who made his last three shots of the half, led all scorers at halftime with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. He for 4-for-5 in the second half.
Cal started the second half hot from the field, making 6 of 9 shots in a 12-1 run to open a 46-34 lead with 15:24 remaining.
The Beavers, who trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half, went on an 11-2 run to cut the gap to 60-53 with 4:10 left.
Oregon State, which made only 3 of 12 shots from 3-point range overall, would not get closer than that the rest of the way.
