Will Richard scored 21 points to lead Florida to an 87-76 win over Richmond in an Orange Bowl Classic game in Sunrise, Fla., on Saturday.
Tyrese Samuel had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Micah Handlogten had eight points and 10 rebounds for Florida (6-3), which had a 49-30 rebounding advantage.
Isaiah Bigelow had 17 points and seven rebounds and Neal Quinn also scored 17 points for the Spiders. Mikkel Tyne had 16 points and Jordan King added 14 points in defeat for Richmond (5-5), which shot 42.9 percent from the field and was 11 of 22 from 3-point range.
The Gators shot 44.6 percent of their shots and were 9 of 29 from 3-point range.
Florida led by nine with 10:17 remaining in the game, and then scored five points in a row to take a 67-53 lead with 9:24 left.
Richmond made a run, going on a 10-3 surge to cut Florida's lead to 70-63 with 7:19 remaining after a 3-pointer by Tyne.
Florida countered, taking a 79-67 lead with 4:51 left after a basket by Zyon Pullin.
Leading 43-38 with 17:49 remaining in the game, Florida then took a 49-40 lead with 15:21 left after a basket by Alex Condon.
After Richmond made it a 53-46 game with 13:26 left, the Gators then went on a 9-0 run to grab a 62-46 lead with 11:47 remaining following a 3-pointer by Richard.
The Spiders made a run of their own, scoring the next seven points to cut Florida's lead to 62-53 with 10:17 left.
Florida held a 40-30 lead at halftime, shooting 15 of 35 in the first half from the field compared to 35.5 percent from Richmond.
Florida got off to a good start, taking an 18-10 lead with 12:44 remaining in the first half.
Richmond answered, going on a 9-3 run to cut Florida's lead to 21-19 with 8:53 to go until halftime.
The Gators responded with a 7-2 spurt to grab a 28-21 lead with 6:39 left in the first half.
