CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Sophomore guard Bruce Brown recorded his second career triple-double as one of five players in double figures as No. 13 Miami overcame a sluggish start and ran away to a 77-45 victory over Gardner-Webb in its season opener Friday night.
Brown had 10 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as the third player in program history to put up a triple-double.
Sophomore forward Dewan Huell and junior center Ebuku Izundu shared scoring honors for the game with 14 points each. Izundu also had 10 rebounds.
Senior guard Ja'Quan Newton added 13 and freshman guard Lonnie Walker matched Brown with 10 points as the Hurricanes outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 50-22 in the second half on the strength of 63.3 percent shooting.
They finished shooting 50.0 percent for the game.
Forward DJ Laster, with 10 points, was the only double-figure scorer for Gardner-Webb.
Miami went the first four minutes of the game before scoring, allowing the visitors to jump out to a 7-0 lead. The Hurricanes responded with a 10-0 run over the next five minutes, however, and seemed poised to take command of the game.
But they couldn't quite shake the Bulldogs the rest of the opening period.
After the Hurricanes pulled out to a 27-18 lead, their largest of the game to that point, the Bulldogs got the final two baskets of the half, including a 3-pointer from guard Liam O'Reilly, to close the gap to 27-23 at the intermission.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half with the Bulldogs shooting 32.3 percent (10-of-31) and the Hurricanes 33.3 (9-of-27).
