Marek Dolezaj had 17 points and Oshae Brissett added 13 points and nine rebounds to lead the No. 11-seed Syracuse Orangemen to a 57-52 win over the sixth-seed TCU Horned Frogs in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional in Detroit.
Kenrich Williams had 14 points and eight rebounds and Vladimir Brodziansky added 13 points to lead the Horned Frogs, who were upset in the first round of their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 20 years.
Both teams struggled offensively throughout the game. Syracuse, which advanced to the matchup after winning its play-in game on Wednesday against Arizona State, shot just 37 percent from the field and 21 percent from 3-point range and TCU (21-12) shot 38 percent from the field and 18 percent from 3-point range.
The Orangemen won despite going scoreless for a five minute, six second stretch to close the first half and open the second half. Syracuse (22-13) had been leading 27-20 with 3:55 left in the first half before the Horned Frogs went on an 8-0 run to end the half and take a 28-27 lead into the locker room.
Dolezaj had 13 points in the first half to lead the Orangemen. Williams had 10 of his points in the first half for the Horned Frogs.
Syracuse claimed a 37-34 advantage on the boards behind 10 rebounds from Pascal Chukwu, who added eight points with 6 of 6 free-throw shooting. The Orangemen's backcourt of Frank Howard and Tyus Battle went a combined 6 of 23 from the field, and 3 for 10 from 3-point range.
Aside from Williams, TCU's other starting guards -- Alex Robinson and Desmond Bane -- scored a combined 12 points on 5 of 17 shooting, though they did add 12 assists.
With the win, Syracuse advances to face Michigan State on Sunday in the Round of 32. The Orangemen have advanced to the second round for the second time in three years after making it six straight years from 2009-2014.
