Lions 24, Argonauts 16: Running back Andrew Harris ran for 103 yards and one touchdown and added 49 receiving yards as host BC extended Toronto’s west-coast misery.
Linebacker Solomon Elimimian had nine tackles in his season debut to lead the Lions’ defence in a suffocating effort against the defending Grey Cup champion. Quarterback Travis Lulay finished 20-for-34 for 249 yards, connecting with slotback Nick Moore six times for 107 yards as BC improved to 1-1.
Veteran kicker Noel Prefontaine recorded field goals from 42, 12 and 37 yards for the Argonauts (1-1), who who have not won at BC Place since 2002. Quarterback Ricky Ray was limited to 215 yards on 28-for-39 passing, but ran for a seven-yard touchdown in the final minutes of the game.
Lions slotback Shawn Gore left the game in the second quarter after suffering a concussion on a hit by Toronto defensive back Janzen Jackson. Wide receiver Paris Jackson, who has been relegated to special teams duty with BC for the past couple seasons, caught four passes for 30 yards replacing the injured Gore.
Toronto defensive back Jalil Carter intercepted a Lulay pass on the Lions’ 20-yard line late in the third quarter, but the Argonauts could only manage a field goal on the ensuing possession. Early in the fourth quarter, Jackson blocked a BC punt, but the short field again resulted in a field goal by Prefontaine.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Prefontaine, a six-time CFL all star who will turn 40 in December, started the season on Toronto’s practice squad but joined the active roster after K Swayze Waters suffered an injury in Week 1. … Lions LB Adam Bighill left the game with an injured left ankle early in the third quarter after colliding with two Argonauts players. … Argonauts DT Khalif Mitchell took a costly penalty for a late hit on Lulay in the fourth quarter, setting up a four-yard touchdown run by Harris on the next play.
