Argonauts 38, Lions 12: Backup quarterback Zach Collaros made the most of his first CFL start, completing 21-of-25 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns as host Toronto overcame key absences on offence to shut down BC.
Collaros, filling in for injured quarterback Ricky Ray, connected with slotback Jason Barnes, fullback Zander Robinson and wide receiver John Chiles for touchdowns to give the Argonauts (3-2) their first victory over a West Division opponent. Running back Curtis Steele started in place of the injured Chad Kackert and finished with 109 combined yards and two rushing touchdowns in his CFL debut.
Quarterback Travis Lulay was limited to 226 yards on 20-for-29 passing as BC (3-2) failed to score a touchdown in its first loss since Week 1. Lulay found slotback Nick Moore for passes of 36 and 40 yards, while running back Andrew Harris had 141 combined yards.
Collaros fumbled the ball away on Toronto’s first drive and was sacked for a 14-yard loss by Lions linebacker Adam Bighill with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter, but the former University of Cincinnati star sidestepped Bighill to find Barnes for a 22-yard touchdown 1:50 into the second quarter. Collaros finished with 28 rushing yards on eight carries.
Lulay was sacked by Toronto defensive tackle Khalif Mitchell, linebacker Shane Horton and defensive back Jalil Carter while seeing pressure all game, throwing an interception to linebacker Marcus Ball with 1:19 remaining in the first quarter. The Argonauts defence stopped BC in the red zone four times, limiting the Lions to four short field goals by kicker Paul McCallum.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Robinson, a former defensive end, caught his first career touchdown pass. … Toronto defeated BC for just the second time in their last 18 meetings. … The Lions were flagged for 13 penalties (126 yards).
