Stampeders 44, Lions 32: Jon Cornish ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns for host Calgary to give the beleaguered city a reason to smile in a rout of BC.

Drew Tate threw three touchdown passes and finished 19-of-27 for 237 yards for the Stampeders, who were able to open their season at McMahon Stadium despite the recent widespread flooding in Calgary. Joe West made two touchdown catches and Maurice Price one.

Travis Lulay completed 21-of-36 passes for 283 yards and added 55 rushing for the Lions. Lulay connected with Emmanuel Arceneaux, Shawn Gore and Courtney Taylor for touchdowns while Cord Parks returned an interception 45 yards for a score in his CFL debut.

The Lions fumbled twice in the first quarter and Calgary defensive back Derrius Brooks intercepted a Lulay pass early in the second, leading to Arceneaux’s 53-yard touchdown catch 1:50 later. The Stampeders led by 25 points at halftime after scoring 31 on a BC defence that averaged under 20 allowed last year.

BC pulled within 10 points early in the third quarter as Lulay found Taylor on the opening drive of the second half and Parks intercepted Tate on the following possession. Cornish added his second rushing touchdown of the game for Calgary late in the quarter, and the teams traded field goals in the fourth before Gore hauled in a scoring pass with one second remaining in the game.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cornish pledged to donate $10 to local flood relief efforts for every rushing and receiving yard in the game. ... Red Cross officials estimated various fundraising efforts at the game would raise as much as $100,000. … Stampeders DL Charleston Hughes recorded three sacks. Hughes was second in the league last year with 11 sacks.
