Fever vs Wings Predictions, Picks, & Odds for Tonight’s WNBA Game

For the WNBA finale entering a month-long hiatus, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever will look to feast on the Dallas Wings and the league's worst defense. The Fever have found a groove and we like that to continue with our WNBA picks.

The WNBA is about to go on break for a month. Before it does, the Indiana Fever are looking to enjoy a three-game winning streak by beating the last-place Dallas Wings.

Dallas sits last in the standings for one reason above all others, and that defensive failing will lead our Fever vs. Wings predictions.

Let's dig in with my free WNBA picks before tip at 7:30 ET on Wednesday, July 17.

Fever vs Wings predictions

My best bet
Fever team total Over 90.5 (-118 at BetRivers)

My analysis
The last WNBA game for a month may not feature much defense. The Indiana Fever and Dallas Wings are middling at best and terrible at worst at that end of the court.

Across the last month, Indiana has posted the No. 8 defensive rating in the WNBA, within range of reaching No. 6. Dallas, meanwhile, suffers the worst defensive rating in the league. And even that does not properly describe how bad things have been.

The Wings’ defensive rating is six points worse than the second-worst in the WNBA. Let’s add further context: The Fever's defense has topped out at mediocre, but its rating is 11.3 points better than the Wings’ in the last month.

Part of Dallas’ problem has been its offense. Sure, its rating ranks No. 9 in the league, but that is still rather atrocious with only 12 teams to choose from. And those empty possessions only help opponents get into transition to find easier buckets.

And there are plenty of transition moments. The Wings have played at the second-fastest pace in the last month. The third? The Fever.

Even if this game was not the only item standing between most of these players and a month of rest, targeting Overs would be the sensical choice. Given the awaiting beaches, complete and total lapses in defensive focus could be the norm tonight.

Caitlin Clark odds, prop for tonight

My best bet
Caitlin Clark Over 9.5 assists (-108 at FanDuel)

My analysis
Caitlin Clark’s hot streak fell off on Sunday against the Lynx, scoring 17 points and dishing out six assists. That was more than good enough, given Indiana won outright as a 4.5-point underdog.

But Clark had cracked double-digit assists in six of her previous seven games, averaging 11.7 dimes in that stretch. Failing to match that against the best defense in the WNBA is hardly indicative of what should happen against the worst defense in the WNBA.

Fever vs Wings same-game parlay (SGP)

Fever team total Over 91.5

Caitlin Clark Over 9.5 assists

Arike Ogunbowale Over 2.5 threes

Arike Ogunbowale has been struggling of late, hitting just 23.3% from deep in her last four games. But she is still shooting from beyond the arc 7.5 times per game.

The Fever defense hardly warrants praise. It is no longer a laughingstock, but it still gives up more looks from long range than anyone else in the WNBA across the last month, 26.9 compared to 25.7 from the Mercury at the second-highest rate.

Ogunbowale is never hesitant to shoot and never reluctant to pull up from deep. Indiana encourages it.

Even if her ugly shooting continues, Ogunbowale should take enough threes to clear this prop and fulfill this same-game parlay.

Fever vs Wings opening odds

  • Spread: Indiana -4.5 (-105) | Dallas +4.5 (-115)
  • Moneyline: Indiana -190 | Dallas +155
  • Over/Under: Over 176.5 (-110) | Under 176.5 (-110)

Fever vs Wings spread and Over/Under analysis

  • The Fever opened as four-point favorites late on Monday before falling to -3.5 early on Wednesday.
  • Both Dallas and Indiana played Phoenix in the last week. The Wings were 7.5-point road underdogs, while the Fever were 2-point home favorites. Adjust each of those spreads for homecourt advantages, and a power rankings edge of 4.5 points tilts Indiana’s way. But then add in Dallas being at home tonight, and this spread would, logically, be closer to -2 than -4.5.
  • The total opened at 173.5 on Monday evening before consistently climbing, peaking at 179.5 on Wednesday midday and then settling at 178.5.

Fever vs Wings trend

If logic argues for the spread to be closer to -2 than -4.5, Dallas’ 2-16 against the spread record since June 2 explains the discrepancy. Find more WNBA betting trends for Fever vs. Wings.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
