With all of the WNBA conversation focused on Caitlin Clark right now, it's allowed the Minnesota Lynx to surge without the world catching on just yet. They can continue this impressive start against the Los Angeles Sparks tonight.

There is every reason to back Minnesota in our Lynx vs. Sparks predictions, and that will lead our free WNBA picks before tip on Wednesday, June 6, at 10:00 ET.

Lynx vs Sparks predictions

My best bet
Lynx -7 (-105 at Caesars)

My analysis
It's not just that the Minnesota Lynx are 6-2 outright, or the fact that they're enjoying the No. 3 defensive rating in the WNBA.

The Lynx have been underdogs in their first four straight-up wins, and their only straight-up losses this season have come against the unbeaten Connecticut Sun and the two-time defending champions Las Vegas Aces.

Minnesota has exceeded bookmakers’ expectations by an average of 11.8 games, and that includes the ATS loss to the Aces. Even as favorites, the Lynx have exceeded the spread by 10.5 and 17.5 points this week.

On the other side of the floor, the Los Angeles Sparks are 2-5-1 ATS this year, including 1-4 in their last five. They have fallen short of bookmakers’ expectations by an average of 5.4 points in their five ATS losses, sporting the No. 8 offensive rating in the league and the No. 9 defensive rating.

Too often, the conversation around the WNBA tries to discuss the sport like usual handicapping approaches do not apply. The correct approach is to treat it like you do every other sport, and in sports betting, we all know the value of recognizing a team’s improvement before oddsmakers do.

This matchup provides both thoughts.

Lynx vs Sparks same-game parlay (SGP)

Lynx -7.5

Sparks team total Under 74.5

Sparks first half +4.5

Holy counter-intuitive parlay payout.

And yet, this is not bold. Seven of Minnesota’s eight opponents have fallen short of their team totals, the exception being the Seattle Storm in their second straight game against the Lynx.

Meanwhile, six of Minnesota’s eight opponents have either led at halftime or trailed by four points or fewer. The Lynx defense dials in after halftime, another similarity to its fellow Target Center resident.

Lynx vs Sparks opening odds

  • Spread: Minnesota -7.5 (-110) | Los Angeles +7.5 (-110)
  • Moneyline: Minnesota -375 | Los Angeles +280
  • Over/Under: Over 160.5 (-115) | Under 160.5 (-105)

Lynx vs Sparks spread and Over/Under analysis

  • The line fell to -7 for a bit of Tuesday and then jumped to -8 for some of Wednesday morning, both times returning to -7.5.
  • The total, however, did genuinely move. It opened at 160.5 on Tuesday morning and fell to 159.5 by the end of the night before a big shift to 157.0 on Wednesday morning, reaching its nadir and home of 156.0 during Wednesday’s lunch hour.
  • Logically, that much of a change in the total should have also been reflected in the spread, given Minnesota is spurred by its defense.

Douglas Farmer
Betting Analyst

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
