The WNBA season can be deceptive in its length. With so much of it squeezed into the summer, it feels like a quick season.

Then you take a moment to think and remember just how long ago it was that the Minnesota Lynx began the season 1-7, a stretch ending with a 2-point home loss to the Indiana Fever, then 2-5. At the time, it sure seemed like the Lynx were tanking to the bottom of the league, worse than even the Fever.

While that was just two months ago this week, Minnesota was clearly not headed to the bottom of the league, where Indiana now is. Will that long-term trend continue tonight?

Here are our free WNBA picks and predictions for the Lynx vs. the Fever on August 10, with tip set for 7:00 ET.

Lynx vs Fever picks and predictions

What am I missing? The Minnesota Lynx are favored by just a bucket tonight?

The same Lynx that have won against the spread in five of their last six games, with that sole ATS loss coming by a single point against the Liberty? Those Lynx are favored by just two points tonight?

Against the league-worst Indiana Fever that have gone 0-6 ATS in their last six games, falling short of Vegas' expectations by an average of 9.8 points? Indiana was favored in three of those games, and an underdog of just 2.5 points in another, yet was hardly competitive in five of the six games.

What am I missing?

That question is being used rhetorically, but it was the most frequent wonder of this handicap. Lynx star forward Napheesa Collier is back in the lineup, pouring in 29 points on Tuesday in a win at Chicago.

While Minnesota rookie forward Dorka Juhasz has been a delightful surprise this season — averaging six points, six rebounds, and two assists in 24 minutes per game — missing her to a hamstring injury should not sway this line.

What am I missing?

There is no subtle tanking suggestion. The Lynx are firmly in the playoff picture and threatening to be a Top-4 seed, while the Fever have all but locked up the best odds at the first pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft.

What am I missing?

Since that June 9 loss to Indiana, Minnesota has gone 4-0-1 ATS as a favorite and 5-2 ATS as a short underdog of 5.5 points or fewer. All those trends suggest the Lynx should be just fine with this slight edge tonight.

There's no logical reason for the spread to be so narrow unless sportsbooks think the 22 games in the last two months should not overshadow that miserable start to the season. Like I said, there is no logical reason.

My best bet: Lynx -2 (-110 at Caesars)

Lynx vs Fever spread and Over/Under analysis

This spread opened at a more reasonable number, hitting the market with the Lynx favored by 3.5 on Wednesday evening. Come Thursday morning, it fell to -2.5 with some books offering -2.

Minnesota was a 2-point favorite when these two met a month ago, winning 90-83 on the strength of a strong first quarter. The Lynx established a 7-point lead in that opening frame and never trailed the rest of the way. Collier scored 32 points and grabbed eight rebounds while guard Kayla McBride added 21 points and six boards.

Indiana’s strong interior presence held up its own end, with Aliyah Boston and Nalyssa Smith combining for 40 points and 20 rebounds, but a lack of perimeter shooting prevented the Fever from keeping up with the Lynx offense.

That hasn’t changed. Indiana has ranked No. 10 in the league in 3-point shooting in the last two months while taking the second-fewest threes per 100 possessions over that span.

Those kinds of shooting struggles give an idea of why this total has fallen to 162.5 from its Wednesday night peak of 163.5. The Fever have hit the Under in six of their last seven games.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
