Right-hander Dylan Cease (1-1, 7.98 ERA) will have quite a bar to clear when he takes the mound for the series opener on Monday. He's coming off perhaps the worst of his 159 MLB starts, allowing nine runs in four innings Tuesday night during a 10-4 loss to the Athletics in West Sacramento, Calif.

Cease is 4-2 with a 2.38 ERA in seven career starts against the Cubs, beating them twice last year.

Right-hander Jameson Taillon (1-1, 6.06 ERA) will start for Chicago on Monday night. His last outing was Tuesday, when he received a no-decision after yielding three runs and five hits in six innings of a 10-6 win over Texas. Taillon, who walked one and struck out six, is 2-0 with a 2.19 ERA in four career starts

against the Padres.

The Cubs took two of three from San Diego at Wrigley Field earlier this month.

The Montreal Canadiens will try again to clinch a playoff spot when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

The Canadiens (39-31-9, 87 points) had a chance to reach the postseason by winning on Friday, but they lost 5-2 to the host Ottawa Senators to end their season-best, six-game winning streak.

The Maple Leafs (48-26-4, 100 points) have their own incentive. They hold first place in the Atlantic Division by two points over the Tampa Bay Lightning and four over the Florida Panthers.

Toronto leads the season series against Montreal 2-1-0. The Canadiens, who have a six-point lead over the Columbus Blue Jackets in the chase for the second and final wild-card berth in the Eastern Conference, will try to overcome the slow start that put them behind 2-0 at 4:18 of the first period on Friday.

A lively start could be useful for the Canadiens on Saturday to put pressure on the Maple Leafs, who will be short a player.

With defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson out, Toronto will play with five defensemen and 12 forwards.

A Toronto win on Saturday would put the Maple Leafs out of Florida's reach in the race for the division lead.

Nearly a year ago, the New York Rangers eliminated the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 6 of a second-round series via a hat trick by Chris Kreider.

Eleven months later, things are drastically different for the Metropolitan Division foes. Two days after clinching home ice in the opening round, the Hurricanes host the disappointing Rangers on Saturday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C.

The Hurricanes (46-27-5, 97 points) are locked into second place in the Metropolitan, giving them home ice over the New Jersey Devils in a first-round series. Carolina will finish first or second in the division for the fourth straight season, and is attempting to reach 100 points for the fourth time in as many campaigns.

Carolina also is trying to stop a season-high four-game losing streak that continued when it was unable to score in the shootout of Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Washington Capitals. The Hurricanes are on their worst slide after winning 12 of 14 (12-2-0) from March 2-April 2.

The Hurricanes outscored the Rangers 11-4 in the first three meetings, including a 4-3 home win on Nov. 27 when Jarvis and Jackson Blake scored power-play goals in a comeback win.
