Betting trend to know

The Alouettes are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games as a road underdog. Find more CFL betting trends for Alouettes vs. Argonauts.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Argonauts have alternated wins and losses in six contests this season and are coming off a sloppy 30-16 defeat to the Roughriders in a game that saw them turn the ball over three times and give up 112 yards in penalties. The Alouettes are coming off a loss of their own, falling 27-18 to the Lions in Montreal, giving them three losses in their last four games.

Both of these teams have been wildly inconsistent this season but one thing the Als can usually do is run the ball down the throat of whichever team they face off against. Led by William Stanback, the Als lead the league with a whopping 149 rushing yards per game on 6.0 yards per carry.

That could be a very bad matchup for a Toronto defense that has been hit hard by injuries. The Argos defensive line has been decimated for weeks and now their linebacker corps will be without its two best players in Henoc Muamba and Cameron Judge. The two LBs are not just tackling machines but they are also national players and ratio-breakers which means their absence could have a ripple effect throughout Toronto's lineup.

Toronto quarterback Nick Arbuckle was limited in practice Monday but even if he can't go, backup QB Bethel MacLeond-Thompson isn't much of a downgrade. However, there are a host of other injuries at wide receiver and on the offensive line which could prove more damaging for the Argos offense.

While the Alouettes defense has flaws, their pass rush has looked far more impressive than it did in 2019. Montreal is second in the CFL with 15 sacks this year, despite playing one fewer game than most of the other teams in the league.

Look for the Als running game to dominate a banged-up Toronto defense, and back Montreal on the spread.

PREDICTION: Montreal +2.5 (-110)

Over/Under pick

Although the Under is 4-2 in the last six meetings between these teams, they combined for at least 47 points in each contest which makes this lower total of 46.5 seem ripe for the picking. The Als are second in the league with 392.6 yards per game while the Argos are one spot behind them with 374.7 ypg.

Regardless of who plays quarterback for Toronto, I expect them to have success against a weak Montreal secondary that has allowed more than 300 passing yards in three of the last four games. Unfortunately the same holds true for the Montreal running game, which will have its way with the Argos' front seven.

The Argos added Chris Jones as a defensive consultant following the departure of coordinator Glen Young last week. But since Jones hasn't coached in Toronto since 2013, it will likely take a while for his influence to be felt and for the Argos defenders to adapt to his schemes. Take the Over.

PREDICTION: Over 46.5 (-110)
