Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Calgary Stampeders opened their season with back-to-back losses as 7-point favorites at home, and things don't look to get any better for them with two-time CFL Most Outstanding Player QB Bo Levi Mitchell out with a broken fibula.

While the Stamps played well when Mitchell was injured in 2019, his backup that season (Nick Arbuckle) is now in Toronto and rookie Jake Maier will throw his first competitive pass since 2019 when he played at UC Davis.

The Alouettes opened their season by cruising to a 30-13 win against Edmonton on Saturday. Montreal quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. was named an East Division All-Star in 2019 and looked solid last weekend. However, it was running back William Stanback who really stood out, rumbling for 112 yards on the ground to prove that his breakout season in 2019 (1048 rushing yards on 6.2 ypc) was no fluke.

Montreal's defense also looked vastly improved, limiting a highly-regarded Edmonton offense to 339 yards and 13 points.

Considering that the Stamps are a well-coached, veteran team and are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 games as an underdog, it's actually tempting to back them at home catching points.

Even with the unproven Maier under center, I would be leaning in that direction if I thought their defense was as strong as it has been in recent years. Unfortunately, Calgary surrendered 439 yards to BC last week and gave up 410 yards against the Argos in Week 1. Fade the Stamps and take the Als to win and cover.

PREDICTION: Montreal -3 (-110)

Over/Under pick

Through the first two games of the season, the Stampeders have yet to intercept a pass and have allowed more than 340 yards through the air in each contest.

That said, they're still limiting opponents to just 19 points per game, and Montreal has a balanced offense that likes to run the ball and control the clock.

The Stampeders need a strong performance from Maier, but even with Mitchell at QB, their offense has looked far less explosive after the offseason departures of star receivers Eric Rogers and Reggie Begelton.

The Als were very strong on the defensive side of the ball against Edmonton, holding the Elks to just six points until the final two minutes of the game. Take the Under.

PREDICTION: Under 45.5 (-110)
