Alouettes vs Tiger-Cats predictions
Hamilton -2.5 (-110)
The Alouettes are coming off a three-point loss to the Argos last Friday and are now just 1-4 SU and ATS in their last five games, with that lone victory coming against the lowly Redblacks.
The Ti-Cats are fresh off a 24-7 victory over those same Redblacks and are 4-1 SU (4-0-1 ATS) in their previous five contests. Their winning ways began back on August 27 when they went to Montreal and dismantled the Als by a final score of 27-10 thanks to a strong defensive and special teams effort.
Montreal has the CFL's most dominant running game, led by William Stanback Jr., who leads the league with 618 rushing yards and 6.4 yards per carry. Unfortunately, that might be all that the Als have going for them. Their passing game has been extremely inconsistent while their defense has been brutal, ranking dead-last in the league with 9.6 yards per pass attempt allowed.
The strength of this Tiger-Cats team is their defensive front, led by end Ja'Gared Davis and linebackers Simoni Lawrence and Jovan Santos-Knox. Not only did they limit Stanback to 40 yards on 12 carries in Week 4 but their secondary holds opposing passers to a league-low 6.7 yards per pass attempt.
While Hamilton hasn't been quite as productive on the offensive side of the ball, a big reason for that has been injuries. But quarterback Jeremiah Masoli will start on Saturday after battling through a rib injury while 2019 MOP Award winner Brandon Banks returns at wide receiver after missing three games and another wideout Bralon Addison will make his season debut after racking up 1,236 receiving yards in 2019.
With the Ti-Cats boasting the superior defense and starting to get healthy on offense, look for their momentum to continue and back them on the spread.
Under 48.5 (-110)
With a dominant defense and an underachieving offense, Hamilton has been the best Under bet in the league, going 1-9 O/U in its last 10 games overall. The Ti-Cats are second in the league in both scoring defense (allowing 17 points per game) and total defense (limiting foes to 312.6 yards per game).
Although Montreal has an explosive offense and a leaky defense, the Als could find it tough to move the ball considering that they had just 258 yards of offense when these teams met up in Week 4.
Not only did these teams combine for just 37 points in that contest but many of Hamilton's scoring opportunities came with a short field thanks to defensive back Frankie Williams, who had a 49-yard kick return, a 67-yard punt return, and a 39-yard interception return.
Williams is banged up and regression from that incredible performance should be expected, while Montreal's own stellar return specialist Mario Alford suffered a broken ankle against the Lions in Week 7. Expect a run-focused game with both teams jockeying for field position and take the Under.
