Against the spread (ATS) pick
The Blue Bombers began their defense of their 2019 Grey Cup by facing off against this season's Cup favorites, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, in the first game of the 2021 season last Thursday.
Winnipeg took care of business at home, winning 19-6 and limiting the Ti-Cats' high-powered offense to 297 yards while forcing three turnovers. The Bombers are 6-1 SU and 7-0 ATS in their last seven games and are strong on both sides of the ball.
Quarterback Zach Collaros isn't the most dangerous downfield passer but he's efficient and a perfect fit for the balanced Bombers attack. Although three-time CFL rushing leader Andrew Harris is listed as questionable for Friday, second-year running back Brady Oliveira impressed in his absence last week, rushing for 126 yards on 22 carries.
The Blue Bombers also have an outstanding front seven, anchored by the last two winners of the CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award in linebacker Adam Bighill and defensive end Willie Jefferson. Combine that stout defense with a strong running game and you have a team that controls the clock and overpowers opponents.
The Argos fought back from a fourth-quarter deficit to upset the Stampeders as 7-point road underdogs in Week 1. Toronto has high expectations after making some big moves in free agency. That said, it'll take a little while for all that new talent to gel and the Bombers have much more cohesion and familiarity.
Toronto is also continuing its Western Conference road trip on just five days of rest, while the Bombers have enjoyed seven days off since their win over Hamilton and will be playing at home in front of a packed crowd. Take the home side to win and cover.
PREDICTION: Winnipeg -6 (-110)
Over/Under pick
Toronto QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw for 354 yards against the Stampeders on Saturday and he should only get more comfortable as he builds chemistry with offseason additions Eric Rogers and Ricky Collins Jr. Don't forget that the Argos passer threw for 731 yards and six touchdowns in two games against the Bombers in 2019.
That said, despite big additions to their front seven, the Argos allowed 100 rushing yards on 23 carries to Calgary's running backs. Now they face off against a dominant Winnipeg ground game and a physical Bombers offensive line bookended by a pair of terrific tackles in Stanley Bryant and Jermarcus Hardwick.
The Over has cashed in eight straight games between these teams and we like it to hit again.
