Against the spread (ATS) pick
Coming off a Grey Cup victory in 2019, and with most of their team intact, it's a bit surprising that the Blue Bombers were just third on the CFL futures odds board heading into the season. But they have provedn that they're ready to defend their title, shutting down the Tiger-Cats and Argonauts in consecutive weeks.
The Bombers were efficient on offense and opportunistic on defense en route to a 20-7 win against the Argos on Saturday. Toronto was sloppy for the second week in a row, turning the ball over four times and getting called for 13 penalties. The Argos managed to win their season opener against Calgary despite 12 penalties, but Winnipeg is simply too clinical to let that sort of poor discipline go unpunished.
After coming on in relief during the second half of Saturday's game, Nick Arbuckle has been given the starting job for the Argos this week. The 27-year-old impressed when he replaced the injured Bo Levi Mitchell in Calgary in 2019, going 4-3 SU as a starter and completing over 73 percent of his passes for 2,103 yards and 11 touchdowns, while adding another four scores on the ground.
While Arbuckle immediately led the Argos on a touchdown-scoring drive in the third quarter, he finished the contest having completed just 10 of 19 passes for 96 yards and an interception.
If the Argos tighten up and play smarter, they definitely have the talent to keep this game close at home, or even win outright. That made them very appealing as 7-point underdogs when the line for this game opened. But now that they're only catching three points, I have a hard time backing them, especially when you consider that the Bombers are 7-2 SU and 8-1 ATS in the last nine meetings between these teams.
PREDICTION: Winnipeg -3 (-110)
Over/Under pick
Quite simply, the Blue Bombers look like the best defensive team in the league. They were rock solid during their Grey Cup-winning season and look even tougher this season, holding Hamilton to 297 yards and six points in their season opener before limiting the Argos to 289 yards and seven points last week. Defensive ends Willie Jefferson and Jackson Jeffcoat bring the heat from the outside, while Adam Bighill is a force at linebacker.
However, Winnipeg isn't the most explosive team on offense, and being without running back Andrew Harris hasn't helped. Harris led the league in rushing yards from 2017-2019 and is expected to be on the sidelines again as he battles a calf injury.
The Argos have plenty of key players listed as questionable as well, but they are much more talented in their front seven than they were in 2019. The Argos held the Bombers' vaunted running game to just 53 yards on the ground last week and limited Stampeders star quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell to 252 yards through the air in Week 1.
These teams combined for just 27 points a week ago and I didn't see enough from either offense to even consider backing the Over 45.5 this time around.
PREDICTION: Under 45.5 (-110)
