Blue Bombers vs Stampeders predictions
Stampeders +4 (-110)
The Bombers have clearly been the best team in the CFL as they look to defend their Grey Cup. However, they're coming off a 28-14 loss to the Alouettes after choosing to rest MOP favorite Zach Collaros and give Sean McGuire his first career start at QB. McGuire completed just 11 of 26 passes for 149 yards while getting intercepted four times in the loss.
Collaros wasn't the only key Bombers player to sit out in Week 15 with star running back Andrew Harris, offensive linemen Stanley Bryant and Patrick Neufeld, and five defensive starters all out as well. Bombers coach Mike O'Shea indicated that the loss would not impact any roster decisions this week so expect more of the same against Calgary.
The Stampeders struggled at the beginning of the year but turned things around and clinched a playoff spot with last week's 33-23 road win against the Lions. The Stamps have gone 5-1 SU and ATS in their last six games but, similar to the Bombers, could choose to rest some starters including star QB Bo Levi Mitchell.
However, the Stamps have one thing the Bombers do not: a reliable second-string quarterback. Rookie Jake Maier took over when Mitchell was injured earlier this season and passed for over 300 yards in three consecutive starts. If both teams pull starters with little to play for, I'll take the home side with the points and the better backup QB.
Under 41.5 (-110)
The Bombers didn't just rest offensive starters against the Als, they also sat out defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat, defensive tackle Steven Richardson, and a trio of impact defensive backs in Deatrick Nichols, Brandon Alexander, and Nick Taylor. They also barely played star defensive end Willie Jefferson and linebacker Jesse Briggs.
In the end, it didn't matter much with Winnipeg limiting Montreal to 144 yards through the air while holding the league's leading rusher William Stanback to 3.6 yards per carry.
Sure the wet conditions had something to do with the lower-scoring game, but the Bombers also have tons of depth on a defensive corps that is one of the best in CFL history.
The Stampeders stop-unit has also impressed lately, allowing just 321.38 yards and 17.6 points per game over their last eight games. Weather is another factor to consider when betting on the total with temperatures expected to dip below freezing and winds averaging about 13 miles per hour.
