Elks vs Roughriders predictions
Elks +10.5 (-110)
The Elks have the worst record in the West at 2-9 and are decimated by injuries at the moment. However, they fought back in the fourth quarter last week, and while they came up short, they covered the touchdown spread, losing by a final score of 19-17.
Edmonton traded for quarterback Nick Arbuckle two weeks ago and signed him to an extension, but don't be surprised if they stick with Taylor Cornelius under center. The rookie passer is coming off his best performance, completing 21 of 35 passes for 322 yards and two scores against Saskatchewan last week.
Although the Elks' two best receivers (Greg Ellingson and Derel Walker) and starting running back James Wilder Jr. are all questionable with injuries, none of them played last week and Cornelius still impressed.
The Riders have won five of their last seven games, but that's been mostly due to their stingy stop-unit. Their offense has struggled, with QB Cody Fajardo averaging just 216.9 passing yards per game while throwing for seven touchdowns and nine interceptions over the last nine contests.
The Elks actually rank third in the league in total offensive yards (366.4) while ranking fourth in yards per game allowed (344.5), but a turnover margin of minus-16 has cost them several games. That said, they haven't turned the ball over once in their last two games, and if they continue to take care of the football we like them to cover this big spread against an offense that hasn't been putting up points.
Under 44 (-110)
The Riders have scored under 20 points in five straight games and there's plenty of blame to go around. Their offensive line has been shaky, top slotback Kyran Moore is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, and star wideout Shaq Evans doesn't look fully recovered from a broken foot that cost him two months.
Whatever the reason, Fajardo has completed just one pass over 20 yards in his last four games and his frustration has been evident. and the Under has hit in five consecutive contests for Saskatchewan.
Thankfully for Riders fans, their defense has been bailing them out, holding foes to 19 ppg over their last seven games. Saskatchewan's front seven has been outstanding, ranking second in the CFL with 40 sacks and holding opponents to a league-low 79.1 rushing yards per game.
Meanwhile, Cornelius showed last week he's still a rookie passer with a banged-up wide receiver corps and a lot of his production came in garbage time.
The betting trends are also pointing in the same direction. The Under is 14-6-1 in Edmonton's last 21 away games and has cashed in five straight contests for the Riders. Five of the last six meetings between these West Division foes have also gone below the total.
