Lions vs Argonauts predictions
Argonauts -3 (-110)
The BC Lions looked like a playoff team at the beginning of the season but have since lost four in a row. They have gone 0-4 ATS in that span with three of those defeats coming by more than 20 points — including a 45-0 loss to the Bombers last week.
BC quarterback Michael Reilly is one of the best passers in the league, but he's struggled in recent weeks with the Lions receiving corps shredded by injuries. Lucky Whitehead and Dominique Rhymes are on the 6-game IL while Jevon Cottoy and Lemar Durant are listed as questionable for Saturday and didn't participate in Wednesday's practice.
The Lions defense has also been ugly and ranks last in the league in total yards (391.6) and passing yards (289.2) allowed per game.
That's bad news against an Argos aerial attack that ranks second in the league with 279.7 passing yards per game. Toronto should also be more consistent in the passing game after trading away offseason acquisition Nick Arbuckle and committing to McLeod Bethel-Thompson as their starter.
Bethel-Thompson threw four interceptions against the Als in a 37-16 loss last week, but he had nine touchdowns and just two interceptions prior to that, so expect a bounce back performance on Saturday.
The Argos defense has been vulnerable at times but they have a much better front four and pass rush than BC. And getting back top linebacker Henoc Muamba while adding defensive tackle Junior Turner should improve things on that side of the ball.
The Argos are a perfect 4-0 at home this season (including handing the Bombers their only defeat of the year) and are 5-0-1 ATS in their previous six games at BMO Field. With the Lions going 1-5 ATS in their last six contests against teams with a winning record, fade them this weekend.
Over 46.5 (-110)
While Reilly has played poorly lately, the former CFL Most Outstanding Player was near the top of the league in every passing category until the Lions faced off against the dominant Bombers defense at the start of the month.
Although several receivers are banged up, Reilly still has All-Star wideout Bryan Burnham and he should find it easier to move the ball against an Argos team that allows the second-most passing yards per game in the league (276.7).
That said, the Lions defense has been declawed, surrendering at least 30 points in four straight games. Their impressive stats earlier in the year were inflated by two games against the Redblacks, a contest versus the turnover-prone Elks, and a matchup against a quarterback with a broken fibula.
Now they'll face off against a solid Toronto offense led by Bethel-Thompson, who ranks second in the league with 8.4 yards per pass attempt. With the Argos going 5-0 O/U in their last five games, back the Over again.
