Lions vs Tiger-Cats predictions
Tiger-Cats -6.5 (-110)
The BC Lions looked strong at the beginning of the season but have since fallen off a cliff, losing five straight games to drop to 4-7 SU (6-5 ATS) on the year. Their offense, which had been rolling with three-time CFL passing yards leader Michael Reilly at quarterback, hit a bit of a snag — especially without a running game to complement the aerial attack.
The Lions defense has been awful and while takeaways prevented scores early in the year, those opportunities have dried up and it now ranks third-last in the league in yards (384.2) and points (25.6) allowed per game.
The Tiger-Cats are 6-3 SU (6-2-1 ATS) in their last nine games and are fresh off a 39-23 road victory over the Elks. Their three losses during that span were very close games, with the Argos twice defeating them by a single point and Montreal beating them in overtime.
Hamilton has a dominant defense that holds foes to just 17.5 ppg. Led by the linebacker duo of Simoni Lawrence and Jovan Santos-Knox, the Ti-Cats allow the fewest yards per carry (4.4) and the second-fewest yards per pass attempt (7.3) in the CFL.
While Hamilton's offense struggled early in the year it has played much better lately, piling up 493.7 ypg over the last three games. With BC going 4-10-1 ATS in its last 15 games against teams with a winning record and Hamilton 5-1 ATS in its previous six contests against teams with a losing record, back the home side on the spread.
Over 43.5 (-110)
The Ti-Cats were the league's best Under bet early in the year, when their offense was underachieving and their defense was dominant. However, with QB Jeremiah Masoli throwing for at least 320 yards in three straight games they have cashed the Over in two of those three recent contests.
Hamilton couldn't move the ball early in the season — but Masoli is now healthy and hitting his stride and the running game is starting to make things happen as well, churning out 142 yards per game (on 6.6 ypc) over the last three games.
The Lions had a brutal three-game stretch in October where they scored just 6.3 ppg while Reilly averaged 151 ypg through the air. But that's what happens when you take on Winnipeg's elite pass defense twice.
Reilly is still one of the best passers in the league and he bounced back with a strong performance last week by throwing for 290 yards and three touchdowns on the road at Toronto. He also got back two of his favorite targets last week with Lucky Whitehead and Dominique Rhymes coming off the IR, which gives him a talented trio of receivers along with Bryan Burnham.
That said, the Lions have major problems on the other side of the ball and have surrendered at least 30 points in five consecutive games with the Over hitting in four of those contests. With Hamilton surging on offense and BC declining on defense, take the Over 43.5 on Friday.
