Roughriders vs Elks predictions
Roughriders -6.5 (-110)
The Elks are fresh off a 39-23 loss to the Tiger-Cats to extend their losing streak to six games. They are 2-8 SU and 3-7 ATS this season and have gone 0-6 SU at home. They are middle of the pack when it comes to total offensive yards (361.9) and yards per game allowed (345.1) but a turnover margin of minus-17 has proven very costly.
The Elks jettisoned quarterback Trevor Harris and traded for Nick Arbuckle last week but are expected to again start Taylor Cornelius at QB. The rookie has completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 1,062 yards, four touchdowns, and six picks in five games (four starts).
The Roughriders are coming off back-to-back wins on the road in Calgary and Montreal. They are now 4-2 SU and ATS in their last six games and have clinched a playoff berth.
The Riders' offense has been struggling lately but their defense has been dominant, holding foes to 19.3 ppg over their last six games. They've also been terrific at forcing turnovers, ranking second in the league with 22 takeaways, and helping Saskatchewan to a turnover differential of plus-16.
Edmonton is just 1-6 ATS in its last seven games at home and is 4-11 ATS in its last 15 games as a home underdog. Meanwhile, the Riders are 7-2 ATS in their previous seven away contests, including 5-1 ATS in their last six as a road fave.
Expect the opportunistic Riders defense to take advantage of an inexperienced quarterback and lead Saskatchewan to a win and cover on Friday.
Under 46 (-110)
The Riders' front seven has been outstanding, ranking second in the CFL with 37 sacks and holding opponents to a league-low 78.2 rushing yards per game on 4.4 yards per carry. That's bad news for Cornelius, behind an Elks line that is allowing 3.0 sacks per game, tied with Hamilton for the second-most in the league.
Cornelius had one effective start against a brutal Redblacks squad but has struggled in every other game this year, and he could find things even tougher on Friday with Edmonton's top offensive players banged up. The Elks' leading receiver, Greg Ellingson, and running back James Wilder Jr. have missed every day of practice this week due to injuries, while their second-best wide receiver, Derel Walker, has been limited.
That said, the Riders have some concerns on offense as well. Quarterback Cody Fajardo started the season strong but has averaged just 213.9 passing yards per game while throwing for six touchdowns and eight interceptions over the last eight contests. Saskatchewan's offensive line has been shaky, while top slotback Kyran Moore is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, and star wideout Shaq Evans doesn't look fully recovered from a broken foot that cost him two months.
The Elks were shredded through the air last week but they still allow the second-fewest passing yards per game in the league. The Riders haven't scored more than 20 points in four straight contests with the Under cashing on each of those occasions. With the Under also going 4-1 in the last five meetings between these teams back it again.
