    1. Salvador Sanchez (Only loss was a SD. Died in a car accident at age 23. Only speculation, but had that accident not occurred, not only would no dispute me made on Mexico's greatest boxer or even athlete, but possibly considered among Sugar Ray Robinson as the elite of the very best.
    2. Ricardo Lopez (The Master of Technician)

Then there is a gap IMO.

3A. Carlos Zarate (66-4-0 WITH 63 KOs ... WOW. Excitement!)
3B. Julio Cesar Chavez (Execution, Ring General and what makes it more impressive was his offensive physical skills were average for a good fighter, therefore making it much more difficult to win in dominating fashion. He had a hard punch and a great chin, but more so he had that freakish determination. The only fighter today I see with that is Juan Manuel Marquez.)
3C. Ruben Olivares (Again excitement. Stats of 89-13-3 with 78 KOs)

To me, the only active fighter among these ranks is Juan Manuel Marquez. I also have to acknowledge two other great warriors.

    Erik Morales: WON 52 (KO 36) , LOST 8 (KO 2)
Among the very best ring technicians ever. This can be explained as he was among the first to dismantle the physically freakish but one handed, terrible footwork and a terrible boxer... Manny Pacquiao. After Manny learned footwork, and became two handed (using the right hand; quick right hook) with some excellent training by Roach, the rematch was to much for Morales to handle, and a final trilogy (as Manny was peaking) was Morales acknowledged no reason after the second round it was becoming futile to continue as the fight was over in the third round. Commentary after Morales explained Manny had become a new fighter and so strong and fast that he had no chance. Those are some big words from a legendary fighter to explain to the majority how dominating Manny was under the 130lbs mark!
    Erik's greatest adversary was Barrera.

    Marco Antonio Barrera: WON 67 (KO 44) , LOST 7 (KO 1)
A fighter who started as a pure slugger, a fans dream fighter as he would level opponents with a barrage of punches. Late in his career, he had become one of the top ring technicians active at the time. A strange reversal, but when you face Morales on a continuous basis, you better know how to fight well. After the first fight Morales won a SD on a controversial judgement, but a classic and maybe a top ten all-time. The rematch I felt was won by Morales, but Barrera got the decision thus forcing a trilogy. Another close bout Marco won by MD.

Both these legendary fighters suffered a total of 3 losses by KO. What is not surprising is they were all by one man... Manny Pacquiao. Otherwise, neither man would have suffered defeat by a knock-out.

    Juan Manual Marquez:WON 54 (KO 39) , LOST 6 (KO 0) , DRAW 1
The beast Pacquiao who dismantled Barrera and Morales also had a trilogy against Pacquiao, but much different.
In their initial bout, Marquez was down 3 times in the first round, after that he went on to make that fight a draw. In a classic rematch, Pacquiao got the SD, but stated he never wanted to fight Marquez again. In a catch-weight bout many people thought was way to heavy in Manny's advantage and thought a KO was most likely couldn't be more wrong. Although Marquez went on round after round getting the better of Manny, the man who produces the big money won a decision... Manny Pacquiao, and only in the hopes that the public might get a Manny vs Floyd bout that would be taken off the table if Manny lost.
IMO, Marquez has a very rare ability to space him and his opponent within a round or so that will allow him maximum punch output, allowing him to get that snap at the end of a punch when hitting his opponent. His greatest asset is his tenacity and determination. I've seen footage of almost every fighter, and Marquez has a focus unparalleled. The much bigger, stronger, faster and technically better Mayweather (considered #1 for a long time) fought Marquez at a catch-weight of 142lbs. Marquez was fighting at featherweight (126lbs) just a few fights prior. For a thirty-six year old fighter that had been in many wars that takes years of fighters careers and lives, made the weight and although he was knocked down early and dominated, at no time after did Mayweather attempt a knockout as he stated it was to risky for a fighter he believed was to tough and his chin wouldn't give.

There have been many great Mexican fighters. I'm thankful that four out of many top ten lists I got to watch during my era and I got to watch each bout live (Chavez, Marquez, Morales and Barrera).

Once again, the list of the very great Mexican boxers is long, if we added very good this thread would never end! GL to all!

it's between salvador sanchez and ricardo lopez for me as well,   to me SANCHEZ is the best conditioned athlete who EVER lived, it did not matter how tough of a fight he was in, the man never even had to breath through an open mouth, he was also one of the greatest counterpunchers of all time as well, he was a complete fighter all the way,   RICARDO LOPEZ,  technically the best to ever do it, had one punch power yet was one of the best combination punchers that I have ever seen ( it's between him johnny tapia and ray robinson as far as combo's go for me)  it gives me a head ache trying to rate one above the other so I will not, call them 1a and 1b,   for the 3rd spot I would go with JULIO CEASAR CHAVEZ, a strong and determined pressure fighter with a great chin is always tough to beat, especially when you have the skills that chavez had to go with it, one of the best bodypunchers ever as well, 4 RUBEN OLIVARES when he was at 118 he was damn near unbeatable, crushing power, relentless aggression, but had great boxing skills when he needed to use them as well, ( think the castillo fights) watch his title victory at 118 vs lionel rose, the was a lion that night, 5, MIGUEL CANTO, used his brain rather than brawn to win his fights, a defensive master is often over looked by boxing fans outside of mexico that is,    I will stop at my top 5,  but guys like zarate, chaquita gonzalez, barrera, morales, kid azteca, vincente saldivar can not be forgotten, great fighters all the way  and a shout out to pipino cuevas as well who is clearly a level below these all time greats,  but it is always fun to see him try to land that big left hook and if he did chances are his opponent would go to sleep.

    I agree with Matteo......

This is an obvious attempt by ZOUK to downgrade the career of Julio Cesar Chavez.....

Remember, the fighters have to be born in Mexico. Boxers like Jose Napoles and Oscar De La Hoya don’t count because they weren’t born in Mexico.

First and foremost you have to place Julio Cesar Chavez at the top of the list as the greatest fighter in Mexican history.  He meets all the qualifications.  He won legitimate championships in three weight divisions and accumulated over 30-title fight wins during a championship reign that spanned 12 years.  He won the vacant WBC 130-pound title against tough Mario Martinez. He defended the title nine times before moving up to 135 pounds where he dethroned Edwin Chapo Rosario and then partially unified against compatriot Jose Luis Ramirez.  Next he jumped up to the 140-pound division where he dominated over the course of the next five years.

"Chavez was a great warrior and did more then enough to be considered the greatest fighter in Mexican history and this is the general consensus among boxing historians."

Call me crazy but after Sanchez (#1), I'm going with a prime Marco Antonio Barrera. The 126 pound version of Barrera (from Hamed win to before Pacquiao loss) was a beautiful combination of chin, toughness, speed, power, a high boxing IQ, and an all-time great  jab. A prime Pacquiao will always have given Barrera trouble, but what Mexican boxer would you be confident of betting against a prime Barrera (not including Sanchez). Chavez began his career at 130, but I'd still take a prime Barrera vs prime Chavez at 130.

How'd I forget Ricardo "Finito" Lopez. Lopez is my # 2. Flawless textbook boxing combined with lethal KO power in both hands. I wish he would've climbed at least another weight division as he had decent height and reach at strawweight.

Your Location says Texas...hmmm. OK. I asked a question and you answered it, but added a bunch of BS to accomplish.... oh, nothing as usual. If Martinez loses, back on your knees for the Chavez family with the groupies, and not for prayer! You played hoops in USA?

A Serious Question for a man posting big statements:
If Mexico is so great (so many Viva Mexico chants from people), why does the USA have a major immigration problems mainly from Mexico? If it is so great, why do they risk their lives and sneak over the border?
If what you say is true, then 2+2 no longer equals 4.
This is not a question to downgrade people, but a question to a supporter and believer in Mexico.
I'm not a racial person. I have close friends from every continent and very diverse backgrounds and beliefs, so my intent is far from being a joke or an insult.

Nice way to back down. Feel free to post it in Politic Forum.
Also, the is the boxing forum, not the Idol Worship, or Icon only posting forum. If you have anything to add besides Chavez Corona or his son, post it in Fantasy Sports as your quote about Jr breaking papa's records is Fantasy. In reality, Jr has fought and fights tough and the best opponents.
Or a good spot would be ARCHIVES for Sr... it's been a long time since he was fighting tomato cans in the local Mexican HS gym!
Although it's not the Political Forum... I like how you started your fancy sentence..." Anti-Neofuedalistic eugenics based planetary finance capitol controlled colonialism or World government run by private banking cartels to establish a deindustrialized serf based colonialism AKA Hell on Earth".
