The NCAA, its five power conferences and lawyers representing a class of Division I athletes filed the detailed terms of an antitrust lawsuit Friday that has the potential to reshape the business of college sports.
The parties agreed in late May to settle a trio of lawsuits (House v. NCAA, Hubbard v. NCAA and Carter v. NCAA) about the various ways schools compensate their athletes. Friday's filing is the first of several important steps toward formalizing the agreement. The new details outline how past athletes will share the $2.78 billion in damages that the NCAA has agreed to pay, sets up a new system for revenue sharing and outlines new roster limits for a long list of college sports, among other items.

Schools will be permitted for the first time to pay their athletes directly via name, image and likeness (NIL) deals under the terms of the settlement.

The five highest-ranked conference champions and the next seven highest-ranked teams will earn a spot in the 12-team bracket. There is no limit to how many teams from one conference can qualify. The rules also don't guarantee spots for certain conferences.
The champions of the Big 12, SEC, ACC and Big Ten will almost certainly routinely qualify, though, along with the highest-ranked champion from the Mountain West, American Athletic Conference, Sun Belt, Mid-American Conference or Conference USA.
There is no minimum ranking requirement for the five highest-ranked conference champions. There could be a conference champion ranked No. 23, for example, that's the fifth highest-ranked league winner and earns a spot in the playoff -- at the expense of the committee's No. 12 team.

Therefore under this expanded format, any team that doesn't earn the luxury of a first-round bye will have to win four straight playoff games to win the national championship!
If a team lost in its conference championship game and played in four straight playoff games, it would have played an unprecedented total of 17 games!

We musn't confuse the seeding with the selection committee's ranking.
The 13-member committee will still issue its weekly top 25, which will be used to determine the highest-ranked conference champs. That means, though, that if Georgia wins the SEC and is ranked No. 1 by the selection committee, and Alabama loses that game and is No. 3 in the CFP ranking - - or even No. 2! --
the Tide would be seeded No. 5 behind three other conference champs plus Georgia and miss out on a first round bye despite their top 4 ranking!!

Any independent like Notre Dame cannot earn a first-round bye - even if they are ranked #1 in the nation - because it cannot win a conference title.

Oh boy. Instant controversy for sure if that happens!
Even though everyone will know the setup/rules going in, the media and certain teams will make a BIG EFFN STINK anyway if/when that happens, you can bet on that!

Rematches?
There won't be any modifications made to avoid rematches or games between schools from the same conference.

@fubah2
So in previous years the controversies surrounded only about who got snubbed from the top four.
But now that controversy will continue with who gets snubbed but also will be about top ranked teams possibly missing out on round 1 bye and another controversy about undeserving lower ranked teams getting in ahead of much higher ranked teams

Looking at it again, yeah, potentially 3 distinct areas of controversy, and we should not be surprised if/when the anguish erupts loudly and likely with just cause!

Former Michigan State University football coach Mel Tucker is suing the university and school leaders, alleging that they wrongfully fired him last year and violated his constitutional rights after he was accused of sexual harassment.
The federal lawsuit filed Wednesday in Michigan accuses school officials of undertaking an "improper, sham investigation" of allegations that Tucker sexually harassed and exploited rape survivor and activist Brenda Tracy.
The complaint also contends that interim president Teresa Woodruff and athletic director Alan Haller made "false and defamatory" public statements against Tucker, "further destroying Plaintiff's reputation, his professional standing, and his livelihood."
My guess is he never gets the opp to coach at that level again...
