Exactly...or had VTech ended up tying then beating Clemson....according to all these people crying saying Penn St deserved to make it...then VTech would have been in.

Just because the committee says head-to-head and Conf Champs factor into the decision....does not mean that is the determining factor

Penn St is going to get dominated by USC and everyone will forget about them deserving to be in the playoffs.

Bama will booty blast Clempson. Last year was "The Year" for Clemson football. This Bama defense will abuse the shat out of all 3 teams OL's that are left. Watson is the best QB in the country and will make plays happen, but that Bama defense will get to him to many times. The only team that can beat Bama this year is Bama making mistakes. Jalen Hurts makes so many mistakes he tries to give the game away. Then he scampers for 200yds and kills the opposing defense. Bama just has to many good players, and are waaaay to deep. It will take a perfect game from a team and Bama turning it over 3-5 times to lose.

The purpose of the committee is to put the best 4 teams on the field is nothing more than subjective ESPN group think nonsense in order to justify the committees existence.   The only reason for a playoff is to decide it on the field not in some board room.  And really the answer for playing a conference champion is to crown a conference champion. Grab.   By any metric this playoff system is a joke and an abject failure.

No, not meaningless... Conference Championship games are for crowning conference champions... but is not mandatory requirement to be in the playoff... A two loss conference champion, should not leapfrog a one loss conference competitor, who has a much better resume, even though losing heads up.... 

I just can't see the reasoning of saying " No, Ohio State, you lost 1 game, so you're out of playoffs....and instead, we decided to put a 2 loss Penn State in your place....even though you're clearly the better team, and have beaten stronger competition...

We will just have to agree to disagree then.  U clearly favor the old subjective system where it is not decided on the field.  I am for a legit playoff system where it is decided on the field.  Your comment in reference to Oh state says it all because that is what sports w legitimate playoff systems r all about.   U don't necessarily get the best teams on the field but u do get the teams who earned it on the field.  I prefer the NFL system any day of the week.   You know at the start of the year exactly what the rules r and if u win yur division regardless of any subjective nonsense u r going to the playoffs.   Unfortunately, because of this yr and yr 1 it seems this is headed toward at least an 8 team system.

Best four are in.
Penn St fluke win.
Besides, Ohio St a bigger name.
Wash is definitely 4th and Bama 1st.

Not to mention they don't want the two biggest names to face each other first round.

ALSO it's a win win for the league, Bama plays big name Ohio St OR gets a rematch with Clemson in final. Just what they want.

Last thing they want is Wash winning and screwing up the big money in the final.

BTW...... 

USC is going to destroy Penn St.  weak behind corners for Wisconsin made Penn St QB and receivers look good. Horrible rainbow type throws for first downs. just a bad match up for Wisconsin midget corners is all.

It's not so much about the conference championship....even tho, penn st has a great argument there.

But it's head to head.....that's it. End of discussion.

To those making the childish arguments about...well, if Florida won should they had been in? Of course not you idiots.... Penn st and Florida are not equal like teams.... Penn st is good football team and Florida is among the biggest jokes football has ever seen.... Florida is HORRID!!! They won the worst division in the history of division in the history of college football. I have been beating the Florida is a joke drum for 5 + years now.



Here is the bottom line....

My opinion should not matter....yours should not.

It DOES NOT matter if Penn st would beat Bama or not...which they wouldn't....  it's about belonging. They earned their right to have a seat at the table.

This whole Penn st is not in cause they had 2 losses and Ohio st had 1....is Moronic....and IS SIMPLE minded.


The Committee told us a few years ago, TCU....you're not welcome at the table cause you didn't win a conference title...

This year the committee told us, Penn st, we know you won the best overall conference in the country this year....we know you won the game HEAD TO HEAD over the team we're putting in over you.......and it's ok.

If Penn St and Ohio St had the same record and amount of losses...and they picked OSU over Penn St...then it would have been an awful decision. 

But, picking a 1 loss team over a 2 loss team, in which the 1 loss team has wins over Mich and Oklahoma...I dont get how any can not understand why OSU was chosen. 

The head to head argument is comical....because Michigan DESTROYED Penn St...with the same 2 loss record...so Michigan deserved it over Penn St then according to your opinion. 

Penn St only win against a ranked team came against OSU until Sat.  At that point, OSU was already #2 and was not going anywhere...since they already had 3 Top 10 wins. 

It isnt that hard to figure out.  Head to head only matters when teams are tied/close in rankings....this wasnt the case as these teams werent close If you lose to an unranked team and then by 39+ in conference...you have ZERO chance of making it over a team with 1 loss

and it really is just that simple.....

I always find it funny when people bring up penn st getting blown out by Michigan as the all of all.... when in fact it's ( sec ) people who like to use this little phrase ( well.....there clearly a better team then when they played so and so )..... Does Penn st get yo use that excuse? Do they?

Cause anyone with a brain understand that Penn st is clearly a better team then the one who lost to Michigan....

it's ok to use that excuse when we're talking about USC or whoever..... just not Penn st.




I really think the committee has failed us, the young men who play this game and the " game " itself....

that's why I called it a travesty

It's not "simple-minded" to have an opinion one way or another on the matter.....There is always going to be much debate prior to the final playoff rankings, and valid reasoning made by most sides....

HOWEVER.....

The 13 person committee is responsible for ranking the "4 best teams" and placing them on the field to battle it out.  Period.  Its not who "deserves" it.  It's not who "earned the right."  If you're unsure how the process works, or are confused as to what criteria they use, read up and educate yourself.  They've done their part and it really doesn't matter what any of us think at this point.  There will always be outsiders looking in.  Expand it to 6 and you've got 7-10 with legitimate arguments.  

As a fan and a bettor, I'm interested in seeing the highest quality football possible.  When conferences have divisions (as 4 of the Power 5 do), it's possible to have TWO teams that are better than the conference champion.  I don't get why that's so hard for people to understand.  And if you start by bringing up head-to-head matchups, you're already abandoning the one goal:  putting the best 4 teams in the country in the playoff.

But with that being said....

I completely disagree with these 2 statements

Any former athlete will tell you what im telling you.... head to head matters.

of course if a upset were to happen in the conference championship when a 4 or 5 loss team were to beat a 0 or 1 loss team we wouldn't say they should be in...

You're proving my point.  It's not up to you, myself, the fans or the players.

Why play the game?  For one, it gives the selection committee 13 to 14 weeks to assess who they feel are the best four teams in the country.

They use several sets of criteria to determine who fits this mold.

The committee simply believes Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Washington are the best teams in America, in that order.  Period.

Tide, I hear what you are saying and everyone else that believes Ohio State should be in.  However, why play the games?  After week 3 or 4 let's give it an "eye test" and select who we believe the best teams are no matter what happens.

It simply does not make logical sense.  Penn St won the Big Ten title and beat Ohio State.  No way Ohio State should be ahead of them period.  Now, if it was Michigan that was in Ohio State's shoes you could make an argument because Penn St and Michigan played head to head..

When the competition is that close, you have to use certain parameters and not the "eye test".  Ohio State was not good enough to play in their Big Ten championship game but are in the college playoffs

BTW - I'm not a Penn St grad and could care a less but college football has some issues.

That's where you are wrong with your opinion.  Head to head does matter when "its the deciding factor"...

In this case....IT WASNT BETWEEN OSU AND PENN ST

OSU was the #2 seed and moved to #3....Washington was #4

THEY WERE NEVER DECIDING BETWEEN PENN ST OR OSU

OSU was already CLEARLY ahead of Penn ST

The decision was between Penn ST and Washington....both were Conf Champs...

If the decision was between OSU and Penn St...then it would have been a bad decision....but OSU was #2 heading into the weekend with NO CHANCE of PENN ST passing them....that decision was made after OSU beat Michigan giving them 3 top 8 wins...more than any other team in the nation 

Had OSU been #4...both team with 2 losses...then Penn St would have moved ahead of them...but they were never close enough

It's not a matter of understanding.  It's a matter of the whole purpose of a playoff system was to let the teams settle it on the field not some group thinking no nothing's deciding it behind closed doors   U seem to relish these clowns as some sort of gods who have infinite wisdom that every1 else lacks.  Let's just play your dumb game even though it's irrelevant.  4 best teams at the end of the year.    Does any1 really believe Washington is now better than USC.   Or that TCU was not 1 of the best 4 2 years ago.gmafb

And as 2 these clowns Kirby Hocut just said w a straight face that the big 12 made the correct decision by voting for a championship game.   Really what for.  This year they would require OK who just beat W Va and Ok State on the road, to turn around and beat them again.  Tell me how that helps determine whether any of those teams r part of the best 4 or deserve consideration.

This is nothing more than a group of old men who can't live with the idea of the bowl system dying.  In order to justify their existence they create these subjective hoops and then change them each year to whatever suits their desire.

It has to go to at least 8 teams as this quasi playoff system is not working.

The point of the playoff system was to bring the human element to the forefront, and eliminate the computer intervention.  That was the entire intent of the transition from the BCS format.  That's not debatable.

I don't relish the selection committee as gods, but let's be honest, they might as well be.  They hold the power to make the call.  Personally, I'm for smaller government via a much larger committee.  And I'm definitely up for more football, so I'd gladly open an 8  team playoff.

All I'm stating is, the objective is to put the 4 best teams on the field.  There are going to many legitimate arguments for the 3rd or 4th spot.  To think there is only one definitive set of 4 is more simple-minded than grasping the fact that there will always be outsiders looking in and accepting it as reality.

Helll, I think Michigan, Oklahoma or Florida State are realistically better than Penn State.  You may think they're one of the 4 best teams in the nation.  There are others who have legitimate arguments to say other teams are better than those.  Our opinions count way less than they vary.

The 4 best teams are more often than not the 4 most deserving of a playoff berth.....probably why there's really no right or wrong here....just opinions. USC is favored by a touchdown over Penn State, so it's obvious who's perceived to be the better team......but none of you think USC is a more deserving playoff team. The problem is that there's not a set criteria. TCU's resume in 2014 was every bit as good as Ohio State's is this year......but they were left out. All we have is a 4 team BCS (who by the way would have had the same 4 teams as the committee) minus the computers. Nothing except the increase in the number of teams has been good for college football.

Exactly....USC is -7 or -7.5 right now over Penn ST...it will probably reach 9 or 10 by game time.  That shows you right there how good they believe Penn St is.  Not even close to a playoff team...despite being #5 and Big 10 champs.  Because I guarantee you OSU would be favored, and Michigan would be favored or a PK.
