I certainly watched Stanford last season, but won't sit here and tell you I know anything about Defensive end Solomon before the coach mentioning him in that interview clip. It's because YOUR question doesn't matter...
*a HC saying good things about his OWN players....should NEVER factor into HANDICAPPING games.....unless you really know the history of THAT coach maybe
If you must......there are way too many reasons why a coach would pump up his players.....so his words are USELESS....
A HC ....with exceptions of course.....USES the media to MOTIVATE his team......
he is SELDOM HONEST *if they stink.....he ain't gonna tell the world they stink is he?......the players WATCH CLOSELY....and endlessly discuss all that is said....so a HC must be VERY careful...
*if they're actually pretty good....is he gonna say that?
>> then they might feel they don't need to push themselves ....why should they?....so he will likely always say.....we still have MUCH to work on.......he might be truthful or lying his azz off.....you don't know
A HC might pump up his guys......(individually)
*to of course build up his confidence
*to 'promote' the player as a team leader
*to motivate the guy
behind him
eg In order to motivate Clemson WR Cain....Dabo might REALLY pump up the guy ahead (slot WR Renfrow?)......and say Cain stinks so far...is " way behind the others..Hunter is killing it.....never looked better".....all might be BS
*many more probably.......
SO....if a simple FAN the steady BS a coach throws out is newsworthy sure....to the very few here...actually SERIOUS about handicapping....it is most always useless
note: Charlie (seems) to be fairly honest about his team .....if I read... his "O looks GREAT!.....way ahead of where I thought they would be" ....I would ignore
IF I saw he said his D.....is "way behind....and NOT progressing as they should".... (off a weak year 2)....I might sit up and take some notice > try to dig further
IF.....I saw Saban (seldom gives compliments > always negative comments to motivate) say "the D is about where we were last year....our young guys have assumed the leadership roles we needed very quickly"......I would definitely take notice............
