BOTH! Should have
bet more on this one really. I've been around these two conferences in
particular for a long time. The old man coached at 3 schools in these two
conferences. I know how deep the MVFC is in terms of solid teams. It’s
a net zero world, somebody has to win, but these teams beat the sh!t out of
each other. There's a reason Northern Iowa is the #10 power rated team in
FCS and their record is 5-6 and they miss the 24-team playoff.
I was on North Dakota ML last year as 21 point underdogs vs. BGSU and if it weren't for the WR dropping a two-point conversion, that would have cashed too. I had multiple North Dakota side bets that cashed but I really wanted that straight up win. UND being in the Big Sky the last few years shows you the difference in even those two conferences (and the Big Sky is a decent FCS conference). USD very close to UND (lost 47-44 in 2OT last year) but one goes 4-7 in the MVFC and the other goes 9-2 in the Big Sky. Look at the margins USD lost by late last season to some of the best teams in FCS. They were in those games. They they bring back 9 starters from a solid offense. Transfer QB Streveler is a big runner as well – started his career at Minnesota. HC Bob Nielson was the 2015 MVFC coach of the year.... at Western Illinois, a playoff team that year. So, why in the world would Nielson leave for a team in the same conference with a worse record? Because Western doesn’t have very good facilities and USD does and is serious about keeping up with the other 3 Dakota schools that have been so successful at this level.
BGSU on the other hand. Jinks is in over his head from what I’ve seen. They’re just not a very good football team. Teams #1-#6/#7 in the MVFC are just as good or better than the bottom half MAC schools. There’s quite a gap between the MAC ‘blue bloods’ and the worst teams in this league. BGSU should not be this bad, they can (and have shown this over the years with multiple HCs) win in this league. That’s on Jinks.
