Week 1 observations and overreactions

First off, congrats to any of you who have/will come out ahead  this week.  Week 1 is never easy and this year there were more questions to start the season than I can ever remember.


On to the games....


Congrats Kansas, that's called a winning streak...  and believe it or not, it's one game better than Alabama's   

Baker Mayfield's only incomplete pass was a desperation heave down the field that was nearly caught.  19/20... he's ready for the big game this week.


Big 10 bottom feeders...   Way to show up.  Illinois and Maryland win, Purdue and Rutgers not only competent but competitive.  


How many will be handing Michigan the Championship Trophy after they start 4-0?   Not so fast...   they will face teams with actual offenses after their bye.

I guess Brandon Harris is just that bad

Watched a bit of the Clemson 1st half... could have swore that was Deshaun Watson taking snaps.


Jimbo Fisher...    Do you not like your QB?   Probably a good idea to try to protect, if it's not already too late    


USF...   whatch'ya doin there Charlie?   Look at their schedule going forward the next 7 games...  not a competent team among them.   Setting up for a big letdown at the end of the year

Middle Tennessee St...  0/12 3rd down, 0/2 4th down.   

UAB..  welcome back   

Cal...  new coach, new QB, early game on the east coast and a win.  Not bad for a team that is supposed to lose 10 games.

Florida...   get a QB or just go away.  Seriously.  

Georgia...   Hope Eason is OK, but it won't be a huge drop off if Fromm has to take over.  They may have to be a little more vanilla than they'd like heading to South Bend, but they have time to get it right before conference play starts.

South Carolina...  Jake Bentley looked pretty good.  If you saw him play Clemson last season you'll know why I brought this up.

Missouri...   pretty numbers!   But I really hope you guys plan on trying some defense next time

LSU..  Danny Etling:  14-17    171 yards   0 INT's    82% completions.  Maybe?  Finally?  A competent QB for the Tigers?  

Coastal Carolina, welcome to FBS   

Arkansas St...   500 yards of offense at Nebraska.   They always schedule tough OOC games and it pays off in conference.  



Anything else?

Officiating?   Didn't see anything too bad.   

Length of games?   A few seemed to go on for too long... Penn St/Kent St for one.   Some unnecessary reviews across the board.

Fox Sports..  way to break the budget on the new on-screen score/time graphics!  Sweet 2 color bar across the bottom of the screen!  Welcome to 1989   


Chris Fowler..  love ya but you're still forcing it

Tommy Tuberville?  Don't be so enthusiastic next week   


Lee Corso..   wasn't he leaving last year?  Did he know he was there this week?   Great guy for the game, but he needs to be just a small part, not a main stage guy.  Let him come out at the end and say funny old guy stuff and put on a mascot head.

Jessie Palmer in studio?   You mean I don't have to hear "3rd and California" every Thursday night?   They must have got my letters

Mercedes Benz Palace Stadium...   Damn, that is one fine looking building.  Didn't really feel the crowd much though..

did you see the Michigan game?  one of their 1st drives they went for it on 4th and 3 and scored a TD to put them up 7-3 but wait there was a flag for a WR being on the line, making him ineligible.  they showed the replay and they blew it there was no ineligible player.  Just hate to see Refs possible loose teams the game.  Other than that things looked out I guess

Baylor-Wasn't the Temple coach supposed to bring defense to Baylor? Liberty wins outright? You can yell at Scal all you want (and many do), but he said take the bundle of points.......

Ohio State/USC-nice job of sleep-walking for the first 3 quarters

Mich@FLA-thanks for living up to the hype. Mich-what, lose 10 guys on defense? Me, worry? Florida-pick a quarterback, any quarterback............whatever you would pay Spurrier to be a Qb "consultant/recruiter", I would offer him a blank check

I did see that one...  forgot about it.   I thought the announcers explained that they called the wrong player's number or something to that effect.   Also near the end of the FSU/Bama game with the contact after the fair catch on a punt not getting a call....  

One positive from the officiating in UF/UM...  the 2 targeting calls were called consistently.  I felt like they both warranted ejections by the wording of the rule (I hate the ejection part of that rule btw) , but at least they stuck to the same thought process in both instances and let the players stay in the game

YES  I completely forgot about the 2 targeting calls.  Yes I agree with you that they got the calls right BUT in the future both of those calls could go the opposite way. Which is just awful.

If we are gonna ssy florids offense sucked rather than simply say Michigan dominated and looks like a top.5 team im gonna cry lol
michigan physically dominated that game did u see the d line and our o lines in the trenches?

florida is considered a top.SEC team and blah blah blah every year. its insane thry got rocked and Jim M is an awful head coach and he will be fired

Michigan will win the Big 10 this year....people bring up they are too young and lost too much...only people who follow Michigan understand they players coming back are BETTER than what they lost...add the best defensive coach in the country with Harbaugh and him finally coaching his recruits and they are going to be scary good on defense, much better than last season 

They absolutely dominated that game...how many teams throws back to back Pick 6 and still win comfortably?  Flor had about 150 yds total, in which 75 came on 2 plays...

Michigan will pound the football all season, allowing the stud WR's on the outside to make big plays one on one....I never was a fan of Speight and dislike him more after yesterday....if he doesnt turn over the ball they will be tough to beat...

I want to see Brandon Peters play, and they win it all next year....but with that D they have this year which will be better than last year, they win the Big 10 this year

They did call wrong number as the guy they called was in-motion. The only player who would fit the "covered up/ineligible" rule had taken a step back off of the line and was then eligible! WTF, they don't see that! Had me scared at that point that ref's would screw up the game but game was called pretty well.
Refreshing to see the targeting calls were overturned. Both instances the defender brushed the facemask that turned the O-players head. Not a real head to head hit.

Florida had no running game. Without a running game the QB needs to be a superstar. Credit Don Brown for another outstanding defensive game plan.

Nussmeier way overrated as an OC. Hated him at Michigan, glad he was with Florida.

Lucky for Michigan that Florida was so shorthanded. Early big game with so many young players usually recipe for disaster.

I don't mean to constantly pick on you, really. But you sound like all the other armchair QB's on Mlive.com.
Speight throws two pic 6's and your ready to condemn him. Obviously he was hyped up, often overthrowing. But Harbaugh & Co. had him throwing 20 yds + too many times early on IMO. Second half they shortened the routes, using swing passes too. Florida had good pressure with just four rushers, maybe we need backup O-line instead of first string! .................Same bad logic.

Michigan VERY LUCKY Florida had best WR, best RB, leading tackler, out of game.
Michigan has proven NOTHING until they consistently beat inferior foes and then back to back road games at Indiana and Penn St, which I believe will happen. Then they are contender.

But go ahead and pound your chest now.

Me, I'll wait until it has actually happened.

Additional comments on the above:

Length of games- have to agree with that one. If you are on CBS as Bama or ABC as Ohio State, I understand the game going long. Advertisers pay their money.

But on ESPNU with Illinois or CBSSports with MTSU running way overtime? Every game I DVrd (7 total) went over the standard taping time! Come on. It's San Jose State for god's sake. No need for a 4 hour game with that team.


MTSU- Nice 3rd down stats. the father son experiment has imploded. Will be looking to fade with a good line. The cat is out of the bag with Vandy -3 being a dream line.

Purdue played one game under Brohm better than 4 years of Hazell combined.

USF - wow. Is Charlie strong one of the great new fades? When did he last cover a game?! Texas Oklahoma (in a loss) last year? The lines he gets are to be fully examined in all their bloated proportions.

Danny Etling - a former Purdue QB having success elsewhere. Wonderful. Although Blough looked amazing outside of his near pick 6 which blew the game.

Missouri - how that game covered virtually all lines before jumping to 36 before kick off on 5 Dimes.

Unlv - sets up a tremendous bounce back spot this week. 

Nebraska - they bring in Diaco on D and they promptly give up 500 yards at home. Can't wait for this line to open up against Oregon.

If you look at the UNLV Howard box score it has "C Newton" vs.         "A Rodgers" under center for both teams (and that really is Cam's little brother).

A few more...   

Nevada..  Air Raid looked decent and will set up nicely against the defenses in the Mountain West


Washington State...  anyone have eyes on this?  Falk's stat line looked nice but I was wondering how he'd do without without Marks and Cracraft after struggling when they missed time last season.   Revenge game at home vs. Boise this week   



Scal...  I know Nevada/NW went fairly long on BTN.  NC State/South Carolina went about 3:45 if I recall because the UGA/App St game kick was pushed to 6:20 and it still didn't come on till about 6 minutes left in the 1st quarter.

LSU has a Lanard Fournette on the roster, noticed it during a fantasy draft last week.   I believe it's his brother, haven't heard if the football talent is as similar as the name

I follow WSU. They didn't cover. I wouldn't put any stock in such a game though for week 2, or very little at that.

Crazy number of reviews in the Troy/Boise game because the refs were wrong on virtually every call. the linesman put the ball on the wrong spot on almost every play. troy had 4 FDs in the 1st H and still should have won which tells you a little something about Boise. Had to bench Rypien to win the game.

Texas giving up almost 500 yards but score 41 points and still lose by 10wow. As 18 point favorites at that. Herman is in for a tough week at U of Tx

Horrible special teams coverage in that Texas/Maryland game(by both sides) led to so much scoring.

183 kick return yards on 6 returns for Maryland

Texas had only 1 punt return, but it went 91 yards to the house.

Texas had 2 pic 6's on D.

If you take away those 3 mistakes by Maryland, it was a bigger a s s whopping than it seemed like.
