Still a little early but with the changes we are making to a keeper league its never to early to get a start. Going to lay out the rules. All comments and suggestions welcome. If you have a good idea make sure you let me know.
CONTRACTS
Once the draft is concluded, but before Opening Day, each manager must submit to the Commissioner the name of 4 newly drafted players he intends to sign to multi-year contracts. Each manager will be able to award one 4-year contract, two 3-year contracts, and one 2-year contract. The most players you can have under contract at one time is 10. If you go over this limit you will lose however many draft picks you are over contracts. (The 10 players under contract will not apply the first year because we are just starting up and will not have enough keepers on our rosters. That is unless multiple players are traded and one team accumulates more then 10 players under contract.)
RELEASING CONTRACTS
It is inevitable that someone will get signed to a multi year deal, but then released later in the season. Any player released loses his multi year deal. Any team who later signs that player only gets that player for the current season. However, if the original team that released the player re-acquires him as a free agent, he simply assumes the old contract. The team which originally released him does not get to sign a new player to a multi year deal when he releases a player under a multi-year contract. This places an emphasis on making good choices about who to sign to multi-year deals. Just like in real baseball, you can easily get stuck with bad contracts.
PROSPECT CONTRACTS
Also at the end of the season, each team will be allowed one Prospect Contract. This contract can be used on any player who is on your roster and is also eligible for Major League’s Rookie of the Year award. A player is eligible for the Rookie of the Year award if:
The player has no major league experience beyond the current season, OR
The player has no more than 130 at bats beyond the current season, OR
The player has no more than 50 inning pitched beyond the current season.
Once you have awarded a player your Prospect Contract, you can keep him on your roster for up to 4 additional seasons. At the end of each season, you will be able to decide whether you wish to keep your existing prospect or select a new one. If you opt for a new prospect, this player must be rookie-eligible in the year you select him. You then lose all rights to your old prospect and he becomes a free-agent in next year’s draft.
A prospect contract may be traded - as with all other contracts, the contract follows the player and the team that acquires the prospect will retain the rights to that player for the same length of time as the team that traded the player away. As a result, it is possible that a team could end up with multiple prospect contracts.
If a team has more than one prospect under contract and decides to drop one of them, that team CANNOT sign a new prospect at the end of the season. A new prospect can only be signed by team that has no prospect under contract.
If a team trades away a prospect, the team will not receive a compensation pick in the following draft. The team that trades away the prospect will be able to sign a new prospect at the end of the season according to the rules listed above.
FRANCHISE TAGS
At the end of the season each team will be allowed a franchise tag. This bonus contract can be used to sign any player currently on your roster who is on a 1-year contract to remain on your team for next season only. You may only use this franchise tag on a player who:
Was drafted by you in the final 9 picks of the draft or
Was not drafted by you but picked up as a free agent (not claimed on waivers) during the season; or
Was acquired through trade as long as the player would have been eligible on his original team
TRADES
When you trade a player, you trade his contract. Let’s assume TEAM A signed Albert Pujols to a 3 year deal and trades him to TEAM B for Miguel Cabrera, but TEAM B did not sign CABRERA to a multi year deal. At the end of the season I will lose CABRERA and will only carry 9 players into the next season. TEAM A will have PUJOLS for the remainder of the season in which he acquired him, as well as the next 2 seasons. He will carry 11 players into next year’s draft and lose a pick while the other team carries 9 and gets and extra draft pick.
Trades can take place during the off-season. Any such trades must be submitted to the Commissioner or posted on the forum so that the entire league can be notified. Just like regular season trades, off-season trades can consist of players, draft picks or a combination of players and draft picks.
