I am going to buy myself a new gun for Christmas. I've been doing a fair amount of research and I think I have it narrowed down to the Ruger LCP (which is a .380) and a Glock 26 (StraightShooter turned me on to this option). I just can't seem to pull the trigger (pun intended).
I am not one of those fanatics who will feel naked if I'm not carrying a gun. If I had to guess, I'd probably end up carrying it 50% of the time give or take.
In the resarch I've done the main criticism of the Ruger is that it can bark a bit because it's a really small gun. I do not have overly big hands so I don't think that will be an issue. While not as reliable as the Glock, most report very few problems with jamming, etc. It's light.....9 ounces and change compared to 20 ounces. And you can pretty much carry it in your pocket with no problem....easy gun to carry in summer.
That said, I would love to own a Glock. I love how it feels in my hand (the Ruger wasn't too bad either) and I want to spend more time at the range. This gun wouldn't flinch after a couple thousand rounds. I've been to a few websites and the reviews are off the chart for this gun.
The Ruger is $290 delivered. I could get laser sites for another $160. The Glock is $500.
Anyone have anything to add to help me make my decision. Anyone have any personal experience with these two guns?
For all of you out there who carry howitzers, don't tell me to run out and buy a .45. I'm not interested in using a wheelbarrow to drag it around.

learn a martial art or take krav maga classes and fight like a man!!!! Guns are for pussies.
I hear ya about the man angle but the problem with that is those martial arts classes give 90% of the students false confidence in that they can handle shit.
I think I am going to crane kick the next guy at the bar who starts talking shit. In the middle of his bablings, I will raise my two hands, hold the pose on one foot, then kick that bitch in the jaw!
That would be something to see
But back to reality, 90% of guys do not know how to apply what they think they have learned and end up getting hurt badly all while looking like a fool.
I am a believer in how effective knowing your stuff is but that does not apply to the average low self esteem wanna be who is trying to get tough by taking some classes.
But my vote is the glock

Im looking as well, have my eye on the S&W 380 bodyguard on sale at the local range
I did look at these as well and they seem to be pretty consistent and reliable. The main thing with these smaller guns (and it seem consistent) is comfort level when shooting and FTE's (failure to extract). The bottom line is, you probably have to sacrifice a little reliability and comfort if you want to go small.
Whatever you do, do not get a Kel-Tec P3AT. A buddy at work had one. It was unreliable and you pretty much had to shake the pain out of your hand after going through one magazine in quick fasion.

Easily carried in your front pocket of shorts, jeans, or whatever.
Most importantly...whatever you get, carry it 100% of the time (when legal). You have no idea when you may need it. If you only are carrying "50%" of the time, you may live (or die) to regret it!

You buy a gun (pistol) based on how it feels in your hand not for any other reason then you practice shooting with it (I shoot with it first at the range before I buy it though but I'm testing the grip, kick back, and accuracy). When and if you ever need to use it PRACTICE will determine the outcome for your adversary. It only takes a single bullet to take down any human on this planet but shot placement (practice) is critical. Good luck with your choice.

Seriously, what kind of guy feels the need to ever carry a gun in public? I think there's some kind of small penix thing going on here. Just hope you never need to use it and if you do I hope you regret that act the rest of your life.

hey hutch. i buy/sell guns as a sideline business with a buddy of mine and here is what i can tell you from my point of view. you can NEVER go wrong with a glock. by far the easiest to maintain gun on the market. as far as the ruger, that is a sweet piece to be sure. i don't know how you feel about an auto as opposed to a revolver but the LCR series from ruger is selling like hell around here. can't get them fast enough.i have sent off 2 LCP with defective firing pins/mechanisms. in fairness, that was a problem when they first came out but i have not had a problem with them since. ruger is 1st rate as far as customer service. anyway, if you decide to go with the glock, take a look at the model 30. as far as bang for the buck, it is hard to beat. good luck with whatever you choose and stay safe.

What guy would carry a gun in public? I think that depends on the individual and where they live. If I lived on Nantucket island I would have no need for one, but living in the city why not at least have one for the home?

He asked for opinions on a gun, not your bad karma life changing hex, shut the fuck up.
To the OP, like others have said you will never be sorry you got the glock. No need for laser, especially for concealed carry. Night sites are must though. Thanks for joining the ranks of the prepared.

“Seriously, what kind of guy feels the need to ever carry a gun in public?”
A guy who cares about protecting his family from all the scumbags out there.
“I think there's some kind of small penix thing going on here.”
I guess by that logic a guy who doesn’t care about doing his best to protect his family has a big “penix.”
“Just hope you never need to use it and if you do I hope you regret that act the rest of your life.”
So if he has to use a gun to prevent a criminal from hurting or even killing a family member you hope he regrets the decision to save his family member for the rest of his life?

i have before, when a bum had a glock aimed at the back of my head asking for my wallet.... ask him how that went... and that was not because i am a "big man", it is because i learned a craft that works against these types of threats and i disarmed him.... so yeah, i have been in that scenario and am glad i learned what i did..

And feel free to go 1 on 1 against a guy armed with a gun with nothing but your martial arts.Let me know how that goes big man.

Okay, I just asked the bum how that went. He said you pissed your pants, you gave him your wallet and he fucked your girlfriend. He said you are confused about the meaning of "disarm".
