Do cloth masks work?

Meanwhile, hospitals and health care systems nationwide have had to furlough or lay off thousands of employees. Why? Because the vast majority of most hospitals’ revenue comes from elective or “non-essential” procedures. We’re not talking about LASIK eye surgery but things like coronary angioplasty and stents, procedures that are necessary but maybe not emergencies—yet. If hospitals can’t perform these procedures because governors have banned them, then they can’t pay their bills, or their employees.

To take just one example, a friend who works in a cardiac intensive care unit (ICU) in rural Virginia called recently and told me about how they had reorganized their entire system around caring for coronavirus patients. They had cancelled most “non-essential” procedures, imposed furloughs and pay cuts, and created a special ICU ward for patients with COVID-19. So far, they have had only one patient. One. The nurses assigned to the COVID-19 ward have very little to do. In the entire area covered by this hospital system, only about 30 people have tested positive for COVID-19.

If Hospitals Can Handle The Load, End The Lockdowns

I’m sure the governors and health officials who ordered these lockdowns meant well. They based their decisions on deeply flawed and woefully inaccurate models, and they should have been less panicky and more skeptical, but they were facing a completely new disease about which, thanks to China, they had almost no reliable information.

However, in hindsight it seems clear that treating the entire country as if it were New York City was a huge mistake that has cost millions of American jobs and destroyed untold amounts of wealth. Now that we know our hospitals aren’t going to be overrun by COVID-19 cases, governors and mayors should immediately reverse course and begin opening their states and communities for business.

Of course, some already are—and in a phased, cautious manner, as they should. But the overarching narrative that we all bought into, that unless we stayed home and “flattened the curve” our hospitals would be inundated, and if your kids got sick there would be no beds available to treat them, has turned out to be false. It hasn’t happened, and it most likely won’t happen, especially now that new evidence is emerging that suggests many more people have already contracted COVID-19 than previously thought, which means the disease might be far less lethal than we feared.

Public officials responsible for the lockdowns will no doubt claim that without these draconian measures, our hospitals surely would have been overwhelmed. And who knows? Maybe they would have. It’s an unfalsifiable assertion.

But at this point we should all be able to agree that the predictions were way off, and not just because they didn’t take into account stay-at-home orders or business closures, because they did. The experts, in this case, were wrong. The best thing governors and mayors can do now is admit as much, and start lifting their lockdown orders so people—including doctors and nurses—can get back to work.

This to me is a key quote that emphasizes the sentiment the Left has about, “Well, we should just have worn masks earlier, more often, longer, and into the foreseeable future.”

I understand why you see it the way you do.  But if you study it and look at all of the studies and reports — not just the ones from the media — I think you can see where it is not so cut-and-dried.  

I think if you are scared or have underlying issues — wear one or simply stay home.  

But don’t force healthy folks to wear one. 

Now I see WHO says social distance is now 3 feet. 

Science strongly supports mask wearing.  Recently, US center for disease control has made its strongest recommendation.  Universal mask wearing indoors when outside of home.  Testifying before senate, director Redfield says masks are the most important and powerful public health tool for fighting the pandemic.

Washingtonpost fact checking debunks Trump's false claim that most people diagnosed with coronavirus wore masks.  But mask wearing isn't the cause.  A higher percentage of positive cases had close contact with infected people.  Also they are more likely to visit high risk places such as restaurants.

Saying the same thing over and over without independent RCTs doesn’t make it so.  

Sure they have castigated many that don’t go along with the narrative.  Many, many health professionals feel the same way.  These are smart people, in the field, that have no political agenda.  Study and read what and why they say what they say.

Health care workers are being trained in blue suit procedures to containment of viruses infection going to hospitalization recovery. 

Like the former mayor Gulianni you can carry covid assymotimatically for up to a week. Exposing every one than it becomes a contact quarantine procedure.  But if out break is too large than areas not infected must take precautions.

I, myself, am proof positive that mask wearing didn't stop me from contracting the virus. NO RESTAURANTS in the LAST YEAR!!! No one in my house since August. Not in anyone else's home either. Walmart and Big Box store, always a mask on, social distancing, disinfection wipes in vehicle used everytime when exiting stores. Live on gated, secluded, multi-acre estate with gated drive. Even FedEx and UPS use dropbox at end of drive. Had the virus last month.

Just because a state, like Oregon, suspends a license but SHOWED NO PROOF that lives HAD BEEN endangered. How many staff and patients infected???

How the hell can you have a plan for COVID in 2016 when it didn't appear until 2019???

Vast majority of states still have mask mandates.  After masking for 6-8 months, 13 states have relaxed restrictions to later see increase in covid cases.  Masks are still recommended  but no penalty for non-compliance.  According to John Hopkins university, 5 of 10 highest positivity rates are in states that lift mask mandates.  Florida, Mississippi, Kansas, Iowa and Alabama.  10 lowest positivity rates in states with mask mandates.  California, Vermont, Hawaii, Ohio, Massachusetts, Rhode island, New Mexico, Columbia, New York and Alaska.

Every country in the world has some form of mask requirement.  Obviously, masks work to limit transmission of coronavirus and help to safely reopen economy without lockdown.  Anti-maskers are the equivalent of anti-vaxers on the wrong side of history.  They distrust real experts but instead believe in crazy conspiracy theories.

Why did Fauci tell the public not to wear masks in the beginning? 

He has been an immunologist for 275 years. Do you think this was the first time he ever thought about this situation arising? 

And if masks work so well why have we never worn them during flu season?  

DeSantis response to coronavirus has been a disaster.  He mislead public by hiding severity of pandemic, ignores scientists, side with natural immunity quacks and bars cities from implementing safety restrictions.  Thousands of Floridians would be alive if Florida follow Center for disease control guidelines as California and many states have done.  Floridians consider "DeathSantis" an idiot.  Recently, youtube removes his video promoting covid misinformation endangering public health.

He said not to wear masks in the beginning to prevent a run on an already short supply of masks which were at the time needed for healthcare and front line workers. As far as us never wearing masks, in the Bay Area many in the east asian communities have always worn masks. And you're always talking about how smart the asians are, right?

Florida’s numbers have been reported accurately. 

They basically have the same death rate as California.

NY, MA, RI, CT, are all Northeastern states, essentially the epicenter of the pandemic in this country, with densely populated major cities and large east asian communities. They were overwhelmed early on at a time were there was no real course of treatment and many succumbed. It would be interesting to see the death rates in say, the last 6 months.

Also, while blue states occupy the top 4 spots, red states take 5 of the next 6. None of which are densely populated, nor have large numbers of chinese visitors. Also, blue states occupy the bottom 4 spots as well, and something like 8 of the bottom 10. This is not a defense of blue states. Lord knows I can't stand the governors of the two blue states where I spend most of my time. What I am saying is that while you are one of my favorite people on this site, and I agree with a lot of what you say and respect most of it, you're kind on the king of the handpicked rubhish stat. It's pretty much your shtick to post cherry picked stats without any context. It's smart. Numbers are hard to argue against but with that said, you can't simply brush off someone else's numbers as handpicked rubbish while at the same time gardening in a field of muck in your own right.
