Am gonna make this very simple. Nobody on the face of this planet knows how we were created or what happens after death, thats a fact. All this people that say this or that is really just guessing or their opinion. Even if they say they have scientific facts that support something, it still doesnt mean its actually true.
We can all argue back and forth until were blue in the face, but the simple truth is we dont know.

Well you make a good point in that even the most faithful really aren't 100% certain. I'll tell you this I believe in the idea of Heaven but my mother is just 56 dying from ALS and I pray for her. Why because I want her to live a full life and experience all stages of it also I want her to be a part of my life maybe out of selfishness. As her suffering gets worse and there is no cure the idea of her having eternal life in peace without suffering appeals to me.
In short people feel prayer works maybe it does maybe it doesn't and I don't think they are making your assumption but rather drawing strength to remain positive in a hopeless situation; while comforting your friend. It's like the song everyone wants to go to Heaven but nobody wants to go now.

I'm not religious but you are 100% being a grade A asshole if you reply back that you won't pray for them -- and whatever stupid reason you construct.
you find it contradictory that someone who believes heaven is awesome, doesn't want to die? It's sad this needs to be spelled out, but here goes. For one, Christians aren't 100% guaranteed they will go to heaven. So presumably, there is a seed of doubt they will even be there -- whether straight to hell or purgatory depending on their denomination.
Additionally - and this may seem totally whack - but some people dont want to leave their loving families and friends. Or they don't want to think of the pain that will be caused when they do leave them.
I can't believe you really struggled with this. Maybe you should reply back what you wanted to say -- just to see how your dear friend's family reacts. Im sure he won't be considered a dear friend for much longer.

This is going to really piss some people off and I am sorry, I really am. I just cannot get this off my chest anywhere else so you suckers at covers who happened to open this up are now stuck with my twisted warped mind.
I recently received an e-mail from a dear friend who has a very bad form of cancer, suffice it to say it is terminal. They were trying to get a prayer chain going to help this person "defeat this terrible problem". They are quite religious, practice their faith each day and although I am not the judge would look to be heaven type people.
Here is my problem, if you are really are religious and this world ends in heaven where all your fellow followers will meet up, why are we not praying this cancer takes this person out. What could be so important on this planet to cause someone to forsake heaven, which I would have to add is God's will if he is truly omnipotent. Are we not rooting or praying for the wrong side?
I almost typed back-
In view of your strong religious views and puritan life and the almost near certainty of attaining the greatest gift of heaven that this world has to offer, I am abstaining from praying for you. At this point you seem like a sure thing to go upstairs and meet the big guy and I would hate to see you have more years on this planet to mess this thing up, heck you could even turn into a degenerate gambler like myself. So I am happy and even overjoyed to root for the cancer and see you leave this terrible world behind. Go Heaven-travel in peace.
So there you go- that is my honest dilemma written as non judging and forthright as I can bring it. I really would like some direction from people who can comment in a nice manner and give good reasons why we should not root for death for believers? I feel like we should pray for the other side, I really do.
All haters that believe they are "Christians" will be ignored.
Crash
that's eprfectly logical but what's the point of praying for the guy after he gets cancer. if the god they want you to pray to has any power, she certainly could have prevented the cancer. if the god they want you to pray to cared about this person and liked this person, she could have prevented the cancer. if the god they want you to pray to really is powerful, praying to her to reverse the cancer she obviously allowed an wanted to happen is likely going to piss off that god. the whole prayer chain idea sounds counterproductive to me.
where's cacab? i guess church goes longer on christmas weekend, it's probably a big money maker for the church. maybe he'll chime in later this afternoon.
by the way, the Church of ClubDirt begins services at 1:00 pm EST on Sundays and only requires you to watch football, and even that isn't a requirement. if you took the Church's suggestion and hit the club or the strip club on saturday night and need to make up for it by spending time with the wife or girlfriend on subnday morning, we're ok with that too.

My father past away this year from Cancer... I prayed daily for him, I actually would pray he would be healed or God to take him so he doesn't have to suffer. Just because a person believes in Heaven and that it is a better place doesn't mean they shouldn't want to spend as many years as possible on earth. Also a Christians job on earth is to help spread the word of God. So a person around longer can be a witness

That is the point, do we really believe. If we did then, yes, to me this seems totally out of whack.
If we are living our lives pure for the sake of an afterlife and an afterworld which is better then this seems totally whacky, that is the point of the thread.
Do we really believe? Really, 100% No doubt? If we really believed would we not be living different lives........or do we conveniently believe as it gives us peace here in this world. My point is if we 100% no doubt believed, we would live our lives without doubt by the word and hope for death. Hope for heaven.

I may be in the minority here, which is fine with me. But, I believe in believing. I believe in the laws of attraction. I do not think that a certain individual parted a sea, or walked on water, or any of that. I do not understand that whatsoever. I do believe, and take solace in believing. I think that if I put all of my energy into something, anything, it can be attained. I believe this can be applied to almost any situation. I consider praying, to be believing. The person who is praying, is putting their energy into what they believe. How they achieve what they want is another thing. Whether its a God that will take care of them, or an angel or what have you. It is believing. I do not go to church, because I dont believe in it. I believe that I know the difference between right and wrong, and try my best to do so on a day to day basis. I dont necessarily know how this pertains to your thread Crash, but I wanted to share my beliefs with the board. This is not a traditional way of thinking, but it seems your thought on religion are not traditional either. BOL to your friend Crash.

One of my dad's best friends died of cancer last year. When he took a turn for the worst near the end, my sister sent out an e-mail to us kids and asked us not only to pray, but pray harder.
I'm sorry, but I just don't understand. I've been told that God has a plan for everyone. Why would you want to pray to God to change what is obviously his plan? I just don't understand that. I do not think that religious people are freaks.....or anything like that. I just don't understand as my mind cannot make sense of some of the things people tell me about religion.
And as for other things not having evolved (besides humans), that's the most ridiculous and assinine statement one could make.

And even people you pray for are not saved. Yet some survive. God gets credit for the "cured" patient, but no blame for the one that didn't survive (that was just His plan again). Which brings me to the logical next question....if He has a plan for everyone, what is the purpose of praying anyway?

Example: They had their traditional race day prayor before the race where Dale Earnhardt died. They asked for God to watch over them and to help them have a safe race.
Was God not listening or was it just His plan that it was Dale's time to go. It has to be one of the two. And if it was His plan, what amount of praying is ever going to change His mind?
Which brings me back to my original question....what purpose does praying serve to begin with?

Well I have tried to stay away from these threads but I fell into this. All of these questions are very valid I cannot dispute them. I am a Christian albeit not over the top like many. I gamble, I live with my girlfriend, i drink, etc. I am a sinner and will judge no one. I do believe Christ came died a wrongful death and rose again (Bash away it wont bother me) I know when I meet the big fella he will open the barn door and let me in.
I think the basic question is about prayer. I believe this to be direct interaction with God, which I believe he desires. I think that when you pray for the sick it gives you and the one being prayed for a peace of mind. It shows you care about them and enough to want them to live life to the fullest. It also lets you believe you have done everything you could do. I do think there is a plan but choices and options are given. He may know what your choices will be but if you think about you will drive yourself nuts. Bottom line, many questions will be gone without answers. I choose to believe, and I truely believe, but it will not change my opinion of you no matter what.

I agree with this. I liken it to all those "reverse line movement" folks on covers....or the "fade the public" folks. These are folks so desperate to add some sense to an event (betting on a sport) that has so much uncertainty.

I am capable of caring for someone without having to get God involved. And what do you mean, "it lets you believe you have done everything you could do?" If God has a plan, then what can we do about it? Nothing. Sure, we have choices, but isn't He the one who makes the really important choices?
And how do you know if he desires to be prayed to? Who told you this? If you just say, "that's what I believe because it's just the way I feel," then that's fine. But I've tried to feel that way and I have never been able to....even when I was a little. So what does that make me? I've tried my ass off and it never has clicked for me. My mind is what my mind is. I can't just turn it off.

i disagree for two reasons. i think it's disrepectful to God, if there is one. and, i don't think it shows you care about the person. is there any evidence that praying works to cure that person? praying is self-serving. the better questions is: what the fuck did you do to show you cared for the person while he/she was doing well and whatever you did for that person, what effect did it have?

I will try to reply to both in one here. First of all this is what I believe. Like I said take it for what it is worth. I think this part of what I said is being taken different than the way I meant it to sound. First of all if I know that many people out there are praying for me it does give me peace of mind knowing those people are out there taking time to "Care" about me. I am not saying that some dont do it just cuz. I AM TALKING ABOUT ME. Most people tend to "heal" or deal with the situation better in a positive state of mind. I believe he wants to be prayed to because of the Bible. I know thats a gay answer but its what I believe.
Clubdirt-I have no idea why you sounded so pissed with your statement about what I did for them while they were well. Obviously if its a friend I would hope I am their friend for a reason. Secondly if I do not know them I do believe in the power of prayer and who are you to tell me it does not work. I believe I am overall a good person and if I believe it will help then so be it. Who are you to judge and cuss at me when and tell me I am disrespecting Good?

with absolutely no evidence that this God ever existed, there are still people taht believe in this nonsense. quite comical. and evolution is proven, every animal has evolved in some way and they continue to evolve everyday.
You believing in evolution is comical. The only thing that is proven is Darwin, who came up with evolution, said there are way more holes in his evolution story than the Bible. How can you believe in something that the guy who came up with it said it can be proven wrong? Do some research on what you believe. I have not bashed anyone for not believing or believing in something. Does it make you feel better to do it?

That's because there were a lot of holes in it when Darwin lived in the 1800's. We now have plenty of scientific proof that all of the world's continents came from one large 'supercontinent' which holds the answers to 90% of these holes.
I have no problem with Christian's that don't look down on peopel who aren't religion, and don't preach... but you quickly went from a Christian that I like to a Christian who talks as if they know all the facts yet clearly have no idea what they are talking about...

I have no problem with Christian's that don't look down on peopel who aren't religion, and don't preach... but you quickly went from a Christian that I like to a Christian who talks as if they know all the facts yet clearly have no idea what they are talking about...

I can promise you one thing I do not know all the facts. I struggle when a thread like this is going and opinions are being given and then a guy comes in calls what I believe comical. I disagree with the fact that the only holes were regarding the continents. Do you believe that evolution is flawless in theory? I know there are many gray areas in the Bible. I am ok with it. I never once said I believed evolution was a joke and "Unbelievable" I simply stated the FACT that Darwin admitted his theories had holes in it. Therefore he had no right to call my belief. Discussion never hurts anyone as long as its on the right terms.
