Evolution is a theory, just like a gravity... it's a theory that is essentially a fact, but since science is based on reality we have to keep the case open forever... not like religion, which is based on a guess that someone made, and if you question their guess you go to hell for eternity.

So yes, I think evolution is a flawless theory.  By the way - it's taught at universities around the country as the science's answer to how we got here...

And I can tell you that I don't know all the facts either - and I can guarantee you that in our time on Earth you and I will never have a clue about 'God', I would rather not waste my time guessing, I'll stick to practical thinking instead of daydreaming about another level of consciousness that may or may not exist.

First of all if I know that many people out there are praying for me it does give me peace of mind knowing those people are out there taking time to "Care" about me. I am not saying that some dont do it just cuz. I AM TALKING ABOUT ME. Most people tend to "heal" or deal with the situation better in a positive state of mind. I believe he wants to be prayed to because of the Bible. I know thats a gay answer but its what I believe.

Clubdirt-I have no idea why you sounded so pissed with your statement about what I did for them while they were well. Obviously if its a friend I would hope I am their friend for a reason. Secondly if I do not know them I do believe in the power of prayer and who are you to tell me it does not work. I believe I am overall a good person and if I believe it will help then so be it. Who are you to judge and cuss at me when and tell me I am disrespecting Good?

sorry noworries, that was neither meant to be hostile nor directed at you.  i'll throw some profanity out there without realizing its effect sometimes.   i'm a neanderthal who hasn't quite fully evolved, if you believe in that kind of thing.

but i stand by my point.  i think you are right that if a sick person believes others are praying for him/her, there is a benefit.  however, i don't get the actual praying part for reasons stated.

as for my remark about what people do for others while they are alive or healthy (that was tainted by my unnecessary use of profanity), i also stand by it.  one issue i have with religion in some cases it is gives people and easy and lazy way out.  i can do what i want and be saved and everything will be ok.  i'll ignore my friend or relative while he's alove but when he gets sick i'll say some prayers and that shows i did my part.  i think for some religion is an emotional and intellectual copout (i call it emotional and/or intellectual wlefare) and prevents them from doing the acts we should do because they think a prayer or a belief will otherwise suffice.

I am definitely involved in this discussion now.  I do not use prayer as a cop out. I do think this happens tho. I wish I had enough facts to point everything out but I dont.  I am sorry SPitfire but I dont think evolution is flawless or could have happened but it no way would that change my opinion of a person. I also want to point out that the Bible is the most used history book in the world at universities. Believe it or not there are actually Christian Evolutionist.

the problem with religion versus evolution is that there are 1000's of different religions all contradicitng each other, meanwhile evolution is straight forward.

changing yes but evolving into humans

I find it amazing that so many people have no concept what the word "theory" means in a scientific context, yet feel the need to pontificate on said theories.  There is absolutely no doubt about evolution taking place- there is still some debate amongst scientists regarding the minutiae and mechanisms, but anyone who denies evolution forfeits their right to be taken seriously in any scientific conversation.  If you don't believe in evolution, stop using antibiotics- the world will have one less dipshit, and you will die with the satisfaction that comes from not being a flaming hypocrite.  In fact, why don't all you religious nutjobs refrain from using anything brought to us be science.  I seem to be getting by just fine without the bounty of progress wrought by religion, lets see how you folks fare without science.

I seem to be getting by just fine without the bounty of progress wrought by religion, lets see how you folks fare without science.

many religious people want to put the concept of "theory" on the same plane as "faith".  they do themselves a disservice by doing so because i think their is something more blissful than ignorance.

Everything that you love which is material shall pass away... including your meat suit.

My instincts make me try and live in this world and stay alive for others as well... but to be honest, if I was told that I have terminal cancer I would refuse any treatment and just enjoy my last few days knowing that my earthly misery will soon be ended.

I have lost many loved ones including a very young daughter (3 1/2) and much of me died when they did. The older I get the harder it is to try and motivate myself to continue "as normal" in this life. My drive and desire for life is very weak now but I think that might also be a natural progression for me in life. The soul that remains is battered and beaten and remaining in this meat suit can be extremely diffucult at times.

As for your friend, pray for them that they may have peace in their hearts and comfort in their soul by knowing their end is near and that the troubles of this life will soon be over for them. We don't know exactly where we came from or where we are going to. We can only take our life experiences with us when we die.

This has to be one of the best threads that I've read. Thank you all for your interesting insights and opinions. It's refreshing to see people having a discussion about a controversial subject without a tremendous amount of bashing.

It's my opinion,  I'm 51 years old, that each and every one of you will go thru many phases of your lives with respect to your religious beliefs. The turning point for me was the birth of my son and subsequently my daughter. To witness the miracle of life being perpetuated was not only awe inspiring, it was an epiphany in my life - the belief there is a first cause.

I heard a speech by Napoleon Hill about how everything has a natural order and if that order was suspended for a millisecond; what chaos would really be bestowed upon us. His point was, with all of the protons and neutrons of matter acting in order, and having the opposite event transpire eg: the suspension of gravity for 1/2 second, this act would create the greatest turmoil our world would ever know. Therefore, the conclusion has to be a first cause - an intelligence us mere mortals will probably never understand. I couldn't agree more. How one person or another chooses to memorialize their beliefs will always be a controversy.

Personally, I don't believe there's a master plan. There are accidents that happen and God has nothing to do with that - Dale Earnhardt. I also do not think God has white robes and a beard, but in an effort to pass our beliefs to the next generation, pictures are an easier teaching method.

One final note... in the words of the late comedian Bill Hicks.."if I were Jesus and came back to Earth, why in the hell would I want to see that cross again?"

For the most part, I 100% agree.  But rickey seems to be at peace with dying.

A book that I found very interesting.  It's not religion bashing.  I just have a lot of questions...and I don't seem to get reasonable answers to them.

Well I will chime in again. I definitely believe faith is key to religion and not theory. I also know that the Bible is a the best history book ever. The timelines cannot be argued. I think everyone here knows what they believe and are unwilling to hear any other side. They just want to say how ridiculous everyone elses belief is.

Hutch I do not think this applies to you. I dont know anything about you except you seem like a decent person and not looking to fight or call out others unlike some in this thread. It seems like you are truly looking for answers. Please do not find them here. This is a gambling website. How many people are idiots like me asking for bashing by saying hey I am Christian yet I live this life that involves gambling etc. I cant answer a lot of questions and I know there are some things that lead me to slaughter but I am not worried about what these guys think of me.

i know that doesn't apply to me.  i'm always asking questions trying to make sense out of religion and religious people.  as a recent example, see post # 73.  rostos comment makes absolutely no sense at all to me so i asked a question about it.

I don't claim to understand the "Christian" life.  I won't bash it.  If it works for some people, then it works.  I just don't understand it.  I would love nothing more then to wake up tomorrow and say, "hey, I figured it out."  But I haven't.  And if I said different, I'd be kidding myself.  God seems to be a forgiving person...I'm guessing if I run into him and say, "hay, help me understand this," he would give me 5 minutes of his time and explain.  If not, then it's not worth my time.  If He truly is devine, then he will answer my questions and enjoy doing it.

Last time I checked....the world was round....and was proved so.  No one now believes the world is flat.  Weird...the search for the truth.......found the truth.

As Humans we share 98%of our DNA with a chimp. That's more then a Zebra does with a Horse. That's a fact!

Now, if your god did create us in some garden, he used the DNA from a chimp to do it, very sneaky of this Deity if you ask me, he must have some sense of humor
