I didnt not say it was the best book ever as that is an opinion. I am sorry if that is how it sounded. We had a professor in college that told us that the Bible was used as a history book in all major universities by everyone including professors that were atheist. We did not believed him therefore he assigned us to research and in fact every professor I talked to in HIstory departments around the US and even in England said that they used the Bible often and is one of the most accurate books there is. Take out the religious part of it but use the facts based on history.
fair enough,,,,i guess you aren't talking about the stories that directly pertain to "jesus" aka "J-Man Johnson" aka "J-Man the Mighty" and his "miracles" and shit like that
but you can't really truly believe all those assinine stories in that book though? can you? I mean I find a Paul Bunyan story about him and his blue ox to be more believable........
and as far as best book ever written,,,,,havn't spent much time reading books the last 20 years or so,,,,but i'll stick with the same opinion that i had when i was 12 --- which seems quite fitting for a lot of the opinions that some of you have---that probably could be comparable to the mind of a 12 year old
Matt Christopher's "Long Shot For Paul"...........as good as it gets people

Man has free will.......God created this earth for us, he gave us rules for us to live in....we choose what we do......These rules are so true and so correct as to how we should live........
If science created this earth, did science create rules of the earth it created? .....if u steal from someone, u generally get caught and punished.......Did science create that moral obligation?
As i said, think of your soul as a blackbox recorder.
IMO, people that dont believe in the afterlife have no general purpose in life.......(dont interpret that as me saying i am better than u or vice verse).....i am not here to judge.........but basically, what is the point of this whole life if it is for nothing.......to root as many chicks as u can? to make as much money as you can? to rip off as many people as u can?
U cant take any physical possessions with u when u die......so then what is the point of all this?
I believe we are all on here to learn and love. Everyone has different tests........
Th bible says do not steal........Bernie Madoff stole and look what happened? If this earth was created by science, do u think he would have the ramifactions he experienced? i dont think so...
The bible echoes so many of the values and morals that this world should have and it does......This is a reminder from God that "look i have given u a free will, but follow these rules and u will be good"...if u dont, here is just some of the things that u might experience........Science doesnt provide the moral rules of the earth.........that are very visible in front of us...
So your saying rape, murder, and slavery are moral And if you're going to say where does it say that in the bible, refer to post 108. I'll be waiting...

You have got to be shitting me with this one- of course any student of history will have read the bible, as it is immensely important in the development of the world's culture. Historically important and historically accurate are two different matters- it claims the earth is 6000 years old and made in 7 days for fuck's sake. It claims we are all descendents of two people, one made with the rib of the other. Myriad animals carry on two sided conversations with humans in it. There is absolutely no historical evidence that a large body of person were enslaved in egypt then wandered in the desert for 40 years, and certainly no evidence of a global flood that not even the melting of antarctica could create. These are just a few of the well known falsehoods rattled off from the top of my head. I've read the bible cover to cover, and the whole bloody mess is rife with historical inaccuracies and outright lies.

I like carlin's view on the 10 commandments- basically eight of them are either bullshit entirely or repetitive, leave us with don't murder each other or steal other people's shit, and I'm fairly certain people figured that out without all the religious hocum.

there are some heavy thinkers in here now. the christians might need to regroup and mount a counterattack- crusades style (although i think the christians were mostly on offense in that particular conflict).
speaking of carlin, rostos, i'm guessing that fine young lady in your avatar has a significant other. if so, one might want to be careful coveting such a woman, no matter how hot she is.

Kant's categorical imperative is the perfect ethical decision-making rule for every situation.
Act only by that maxim whereby at the same time you can will that it should be universal law.
In other words, you can only make decisions where you feel that the choice, if made by everyone in the world in the same situation, would not have negative consequences.
People try to point out fallacies, only find 2, and both are very weak. #1 is that it takes an inhuman amount of 'calculations' to figure out what choice would be best for the world, which is simply untrue and 99% of the time it is obvious, there is no 'calculation' involved. #2 is that people will skew the situation to fit their rule. For example, I'm wasted, thinking about driving home from the bar... should I go? Clearly, if everyone decided to drive home shit-faced it would have horrible consequences on the world. However if the person says hey, I'm only 3 blocks away, and yeah I'm drunk but I'm not completely shit-faced, and I really need to get home soon so that I can get up in time for work to make $ and feed my family... then they may conclude that it would be okay for people to make the same choice in the situation. Another joke of a fallacy, we know when we are twisting the rules, and clearly in this situation it would still have negative consequences on society.
You may be asking yourself what this has to do with the religion - I simply wanted to point out that you can be a good, moral person without God. If you ask me, my rule would make a far better person than simply following the 10 commandments. And I always like to share this, because I really do think it's a good way to think about the choices you make every day.

Coveting isn't so bad, in fact you can break all the commandments! As long as you believe in the j-man It's like having a get out of jail free card! Sounds like a pretty good deal to me Can we get something like that in the Church of Clubdirt?

The burden of proof is on the believers. That doesn't mean God doesn't exist, it just means that we don't have to prove he doesn't, you have to prove he does. That is a simple law of logic, you can't dispute that. It is logically IMPOSSIBLE to dispute these and I can give you thousands of examples as to why. Nonbelief isn't based on faith. There is no evidence on Earth of God's existence, there is a lot of evidence that he doesn't exist (no I will not go into it because I will be here all day). Therefore, you must prove to me that he exists (which you can't, but we'll all know one way or the other when we die) not the other way around.
The point in comparing gambling to the 90% thing was simply this: just because a lot of people believe in something doesn't make it right, that's all... but you've already shown a propensity for missing the context of my points.
Don't give examples of isolated instances that support your point when I can do the same thing. Bernie Madoff got caught, awesome. There are thousands of criminals walking the streets today who didn't get caught. That example defeats itself. I know you're gonna say "God will judge you when you die." But that doesn't change the fact that a criminal and sinner got to live a full life on Earth and God did nothing about it... but hey, maybe I'm wrong, maybe you're wrong about God, maybe God is just an asshole.

The direct correlation between the eloquence of posts and non belief is quite striking. Notice how those posts arguing against the existence of a god tend to be well conceived and articulate while those arguing for a biblical god often read like the rants of an end stage syphilitic. There is also the fact that every study conducted on the subject has shown that intelligence and religiosity vary inversely. Why do you believers suppose that is? Also, the statement that god must have created the universe since it couldn't arise on its own is istantly recognizable as faulty logic, since it verily begs the question "who created the creator?"

Boy, where do I even start with this one? Firstly, it reads as if it were written by a none too bright sixth grader. Then there is the utterly absurd statement that nonbelievers think science created the universe. Science is our way of understanding the universe, not an active physical agent. As for "creating the rules" the anthropic principle deals with this quite nicely. In a nutshell, if the laws of physics weren't just right then we wouldn't be here to contemplate why the laws of physics are just right for life to arise. No mumbo jumbo necessary to explain why the universe seems "perfect" for life. Now, getting to your statement that life is meaningless without belief in an afterlife, I would argue nearly the opposite was true- this life is but a few decades long if we are lucky, compared to the eternity of afterlife, and according to christian theology, all that is necessary to achieve this eternity of bliss is belief in jesus. See how that sorta makes life cheap and insignificant? Rape rob murder steal, deathbed cofession, eternal paradise. Forf me each moment of life is precious, cause tthats all folks.

I've never been. Suffice it to say, the man is worth a few million dollars which proves it's not where you're from, it's where you're going.
I'm not a religious zealot or a fundamentalist. I actually abhor that kind of person. Buying my way into heaven isn't my agenda either. Additionally, if what some of you describe as your ideal, or non-ideal of God, I agree with you.
My beliefs are very simple. God gave us complete control over our thoughts and what we choose to do with that is our business. To think the people who choose rape, arson, murder et al., can hide behind the excuse of "God's Will" is sorely mistaken. Those kinds of people do not need God to judge them; eventually society will take care of that.
Ms. KittyKat, I do not need to prove the existence to you or anyone else. I watched my 2 children being born and that was proof enough to me. But what the hell, if you want to emulate Madalyn Murray O'Hair, have at it.

Moving on, your bernie madoff example is patently ridiculous. What about all the nasties who get away with far worse crimes than ol bernie? Not to mention, this notion contradicts YOUR OWN THEOLOGY. Then of course, we come to the coup de grace, the final summit of ignorance, the already drubbed notion that biblical "morality" has anything to do with acting like a decent, civilized person in modern society. What an absolute train wreck of a post.

call, how the fuck does watching children being born prove the existence of a god? If anything, the cranial size of the infant compared to the diameter of the cervix argues stongly for evolution, since as i'm sure your wife can attest, this was not the most "intelligent design." Or perhaps it was an immaculate conception?

Coveting isn't so bad, in fact you can break all the commandments! As long as you believe in the j-man It's like having a get out of jail free card! Sounds like a pretty good deal to me Can we get something like that in the Church of Clubdirt?
i think that's way membership, while rising, is still lower than the christians and muslims who offer get out of jail free cards and virgins as far as the eye can see (although Church of ClubDirt members have the snese to know that you really don't want to anything to do with that many virgins). we may have to figure something out to boost membership.
