Was living in Vegas at the time, sitting on about 4K, and both I and a buddy of mine, who was a much bigger bettor, both liked the Trailblazers at +4 1/2 at Utah the following day. We decided to get up early, and one of us would line up at the Hilton and the other would go to the Stardust, the two paces who put up the opening line at 8:00, to try to get our bet in at our target number (actually the Stardust had a lottery to draw for places in line). I wanted to be in for 600, and he wanted to bet 2100, for a 2700 total. The plan was for, whoever could get +4 1/2, which could have been one of us, or both, or neither, (we couldn't be in contact as they didn't allow cell phones in the booksbook) would play for 1800. So if we both found the number, we would have 33% over what we wanted, and if just one got the number, we would be 33% under, but the important thing was that we had two shots at opening numbers.
Anyway, both houses had the game at 4 1/2, but somehow we got screwed up and ended up with 2000 over instead of 900. Now this guy could be a bit of a prick, and he insisted that we should split the overage, although logically it should have been proportioned out. Well, I got aggravated trying to argue with him, and I must have been feeling the game a bit and I said, screw it I'll take the whole two dimes.
I tabbed that bet as my "suitcase bet," if it went down I was packing my suitcase. But, the suitcase stayed in the closet, as the Blazers took the lead in the third quarter, and never looked back.
