The only reason the D-Backs went so far last year is because they had to go through the NL. In all honesty, the NL doesn't really compare to the AL. I think Billy Beane is starting to lose his luster, he doesn't seem to come off as a genius nearly as much anymore.
As for the trade of Blanton for Ethier, LaRoche and the prospect. Does Billy Beane really think Blanton is that valuable?
If I were to pick a potential surprise team this year, I would have to go with the Rays. They won't win their division or finish second but I think this team is finally starting to develop some good quality starting pitching, their bullpen is very suspect but I think Percival will be a very viable closer for them. This team should easily win more games than the Orioles and I think they have a legitimate shot at beating out the Jays if their pitching comes through for them this season.
The Jays are a better team than the Yankees, and could contend with the Sox for the division. The Jays have, in my opinion, a top 10 lineup and top 10 pitching staff in the league. The Jays will make the playoffs this year, so no way do the Rays contend with them.

Contend with the Sox for the division? Playoffs? So you're basically saying that the Jays will be better than the Yankees and Indians or Tigers? Where can I get some of what it is you're smoking?

dennishopson and lanastasis I actually believe the A's have a good chance to win the World Series! Go Reds too for that matter...dreams can come true..A's would win this time though like it was 72 all over again....the team is better then people know..good pitching up and down the board and surprisingly good hitting too..I'll be here all year to promote a great young team..bashers and supporters are welcome! Be careful if you bet against the green and gold ..might get !!!!
I'm not one to squash any dreams but I don't want you to have a heart attack when they get 20 games back in the division. Good luck.

Yes, the Jays will be better than the Yankees. I don't think they're as good as Boston, but they could easily contend with them.
And the Tigers? Are you joking? Most overrated team entering the season in a long time. They have NO pitching outside of Verlander, and their lineup is mostly old and on their way down. I think the Indians are overrated as well, but they will win the Central, and the Jays will win the Wildcard. The only team the Jays have to contend with are the Yankees, because the Tigers will probably be at least 5 games back.

I agree the Tigers are overrated, but their lineup is still sick and more than capable of bludgeoning teams to death. Yeah, I know their pitching is weak. But it's not terrible. They will slug their way into games all year. I'm also not impressed with the Yankees.
But as far as the Red Sox are concerned, this is one of the most complete teams in recent history. I don't think any team in baseball can touch them except the Mets and maybe the Indians. I don't see the Blue Jays as being even close. I've liked Toronto's talent for years but they never do anything with it.
Stairs and Thomas are getting very old, Glaus, who provided nice power when healthy, is gone for another medical question mark in Rolen. Halladay is a bad ass, but can he and Burnett stay healthy for an entire season? Can McGowan and Marcum repeat their surprising success from last season. I'm not sure. And even if they do, they won't be in the same class as Boston.

Lanastasis and Chase I appreciate you adding to my thread. Many pundits say the Jays will be improved but I don't see them vying for a wildcard..yet I might pick up either Kazmir, Crawford or BJ Upton in my Fantasy League! I think the Jays have a chance but Halladay needs Burnett to help out and then Chachin and others need to log quality innings..how is the bullpen Chase? By the way the A's beat the Diamondbacks 2-1 today.(10-5 now in Spring ball) Next game vs White Sox..AJ's team..AJ say hello?)

I agree with you that Boston and the Mets are the two most talented teams in the league, and I guess you can put the Indians up there too if Hafner has a good year and their pitching matches last years success. Toronto has tons of talent though, and I was just saying they would make the playoffs, not win the World Series. Glaus was really a disappointment last year, and this team was filled with injuries. Wells was brutal, and if he gets back to normal he's one of the best hitters in the AL. Stairs doesn't start, and he's still good enough to just play every now and then to give people like Overbay, or Thomas the day off. If their pitching staff stays healthy it could be the best pitching staff in the AL (along with Cleveland).
We'll see how it all turns out, but there's no doubt that the talent is there.

I see the Mets being in position to win the World Series this year but I see the Red Sox succumbing to injuries and losing out to either the Yankees or Jays in the East.(no wild card either)

Gutso, I really hope that you are right dude as far fetched as I believe that it is.
Having fun with you.
As I said, the A's are in fact, my favorite AL team just as the Reds are my NL team. Through thick and thin.

Hey everyone! It looks like the A's are well on their way today in regards to winning..10-3 now over Gmen in 9th and 9-3 over Padres in 8th! Good game to take the family captaincredit! Chase don't mistake the A's bats with the Gmen across the bay. They will surprise! Nice avatar kingincarbs!
philschnaars I hear except these games are important for a young team like Oakland..look for them to stay hot vs the Red Sox in Japan too!(good timing Beckett down and Schilling too) 13-5 in Spring now!!!!!

I hope you don't live vicariously through the A's or you might commit suicide. Oh, and let me know what you're on, so I can tell everyone the Indians will win the next 5 World Series and sign CC to a 20-year contract.

lanastasis I'm a diehard A's, Cowboy's , Sharks and Warrior fan! I'm defintiely a fanatic and until my teams are eliminated I have hope of winning a championship every year! I love sports and life so win lose or draw suicide isn't an option! If you are an Indian's fan I wish them well...have Victor Martinez as my Fantasy catcher.

Well, I definitely respect your allegiance. Much rather talk to you than a Sox or Yanks wagoner. I just see the As as one of the worst teams in baseball, no offense. I just drafted Swisher and Haren in my league tonight.
