Aliens in the Attic (2009) FUN little teenage scifi comedy I watched last night. "stupid funny" BUT had a LOT of slapstick and sight gag laughs. had pretty much a no-name cast. runs a short 90 minutes and is VERY fast paced. played on HBO the other night and hopefully will re-peat soon. you want some mindless laughs for an hour and a half, this fits the bill. I rate it of four

The crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination, and must attempt a harrowing escape.
Here I am telling LRR about all these Alien rip offs but this actually part of the Alien series and since I had seen them all I might as well see this one.
It basically tells the story of how the Alien creature was created. I do not think this is a bad movie, but it gets to the point of where do the writers go from here. Should they make an Alien 5 and bring back Sigourney Weaver to maybe destroy these creatures once and for all.
I criticize alot of these Alien movies yet I watch them. Just very rare you see a good Sci Fi movie anymore. Hard to believe the original Alien movie was almost 40 years ago.

I really thought the next Alien movie would be a Prometheus (2012) spinoff. at the end of that movie archaeologist Elizabeth Shaw played by Noomi Rapace was off to find humanity's creators "The Engineers" along with the damaged android David played by Michael Fassbender. it was a box office success, got good reviews and has a respectable 73% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoesalthough Rapace did get "bashed" by a number of critics

Alien Covenant is a Dish-TV PPV right now. think I will pass and wait for a premium channel (HBO, Starz, ect) premier because it kinda looks "same old, same old"
btw, Noomi Rapaceis outstanding as abused woman and skilled computer hacker turned "hit girl" Lisbeth Salander in the three Swedish "Millennium Trilogy" (aka "The Girl") movies The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest all released in (2009) with Michael Nyqvist as Journalist Mikael Blomkvist. although they are in Swedish with English subtitles they are MUCH better than the American version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) with skanky Rooney Mara as Lisbeth and Daniel Craig as Blomkvist. Columbia-MGM would have been much better off buying the Swedish films and "dubbing" them to English. I rate the three Swedish movies of four and would be a "full four" IF they were in English. has excellent suspense and action in all three

Driving Miss Daisy (1989) this classic comedy-drama about the relationship between Miss Daisy a,72-year-old wealthy, j*ewish, widow played by Jessica Tandy, and her black chauffeur Hoke, played by Morgan Freeman, who has been hired by Daisy's son Boolie, played by Dan Aykroyd, who fears she will injure or kill herself after she has an accident driving her car. Esther Rolle with a small but important bit part as Idella, Daisy's maid and cook. outstanding acting and I thought interesting plot about race relations in the south in the 1950's thru 70's. the movie had nine Oscar nominations and WON Best Picture, Best Actress (Tandy), Best Screenplay and Best Makeup. Freeman was nominated for Best Actor and Aykroyd for Best Supporting Actor. also WON the Golden Globe for Best Picture, Best Actor (Freeman) and Best Actress (Tandy). Jessica Tandy, at age 81, became the oldest winner in the history of the Best Actress category. has an I think LOW for this film 82% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. plays again on HBO-Signature Thursday October 5th @ 3:35am and I rate it of four for serious drama fans. it is a movie I can watch again and again it is that well acted

Nosferatu (1922) early silent German "expressionist" horror film played on Turner Classic Movies the other night. was directed by F. W. Murnau and stared Max Schreck as the vampire. was the first ever of the Bram Stoker's Dracula themed movies BUT the title was changed and Schreck's character became "Count Orlok" instead of "Count Dracula" because the Bram Stoker heirs refused to license his novel. it is considered one of THE great German early "silents" along with Director Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and director Fritz Lang's Dr. Mabuse (1922) and (especially) Metropolis (1927). ALL are "must see" for fans of historic early movies and I rate them all of four
interesting side note: the {2000) movie Shadow of the Vampire is the story of filming of Nosferatu staring John Malkovich as Murnau and Willem Dafoe as Max Schreck. the crazy "alternate history" "plot twist" in this one is Schreck really IS a vampire!!! also stars Eddie Izzard and Catherine McCormack. I thought it was a well acted, interesting movie worth watching for Dracula horror fans and I rate this one of four

WALL-E (2008) Pixar Studios CGI Sci-Fi "romance-action- comedy" about a trash compactor robot "WALL-E" cleaning up a completely trashed earth in the 29th century that finds a living plant on what had been a devoid of life sterile planet. a search drone "EVE" arrives to check out the plant and WALL-E is immediately smitten with her. she takes the plant back to the "mother ship" starliner Axiom with WALL-E following, where the human race has been living for centuries and has become obese and feeble due to microgravity and reliance on an automated lifestyle. the automated captain "AUTO" tries to destroy the plant because that would mean the Axiom would return to earth and he would become obsolete. the action takes place as WALL-W, EVE and the obese human captain try to foil AUTO.
I find this to be a FUN little movie with an interesting plot, pretty good action in spots and some VERY funny scenes. it is also somewhat of a warning about the over reliance on machines by people and trashing the environment. runs a relatively short 1 hour 40 minutes. it WON the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature and had five other Oscar nominations including Best Original Screenplay. it has an I think well deserved 96% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. plays again on Starz-Edge channel Monday October 9th @ 7:35am & 4:20pm and repeats Friday the 13th on Starz Kids & Family @ 3:30am & 3:30pm. I rate it of four

The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988) adventure fantasy directed by "Monty Python" member Terry Gilliam it stars John Neville, Sarah Polley, Eric Idle, Jonathan Pryce, Oliver Reed, Uma Thurman and Robin Williams (credited as "Ray D. Tutto" for some reason). it is based on the the late 18th century book "Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia".which is full of "tall tales" like American stories about Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill. a FUN and VERY funny movie with pretty good action in spots. Sarah Polley as Sally and Robin Williams as Kings of the Moon pretty much "steal the show". was one of three Gilliam directed early on in his career along with Time Bandits (1981) and Brazil (1985), it has been a favorite of mine for a long time along with Time Bandits which is a similar adventure fantasy. plays again on Showtime Two Thursday October 10th @ 3:15am and Showtime Showcase Sunday the 15th @ 6:15an pacific times. you want a good laugh (it is VERY "Monty Python") check it out. I rate it (AND Time Bandits) of four
Jakob the Liar (1999) "holocaust" themed drama somewhat played for laughs by Robin Williams as shop keeper Jakob Heym who claims to have a secret radio to try and keep up moral in his ghetto. also stars Alan Arkin, Liev Schreiber, Hannah Taylor-Gordon, and Bob Balaban. the movie pretty much got bashed by the critics and has a poor 29% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes but I felt it is somewhat a "tour de force" for Williams in a very different roll for him and is worth a look. the opening line pretty much says it all as Jakob Heym, after telling Hitler joke, says "how can i tell jokes at a time like this ??? to keep from going crazy" and the whole movie is pretty much in that theme as Heym tries to give his fellow j*ews hope. plays again in the Indieplax channel saturday October 14th @ 3:05am pacific time. Donnie Brasco (1997) the mafia themed crime drama that is based on the true story of FBI agent Joe Pistone who infiltrated the Bonanno crime family in New York City during the 1970s under the alias Donnie Brasco. stars Johnny Depp as Pistone/Brasco, Al Pacino as "Lefty" Ruggiero, Donnie's mafia "mentor", Michael Madsen as Bonanno crew boss "Sonny Black" Napolitano and the late Bruno Kirby as Napolitano crew member Nicky Santora. GREAT story with excellent suspense and well acted by all involved. the late Bruno Kirby was excellent in a number of movies over the years, as mentioned The Freshman (1990) also The Godfather: Part II (1974) as Young Clemenza, Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) as Lt. Hauk, When Harry Met Sally (1989) as Jess, City Slickers (1991) as Ed Furillo, Sleepers (1996) as "Shakes" Father and of course in Donnie Brasco (1997). died way before his time in 2006 from Leukemia
there are two classic 1950;s SciFi movies playing now on premium channels.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) staring Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal with young Billy Gray, Hugh Marlowe and Sam Jaffe in supporting rolls. it is NOT to be confused with the (2008) remake with Keanu Reeves as the spacemen Klaatu which is complete tripe. plays again on the Retroplex channel Tuesday October 24th @ 8:35pm and re-peats Wedneday the 25th @ 11:45am pacific times
also Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956) "alien invasion" movie staring Hugh Marlowe and Joan Taylor. has pretty good action and "stuff that goes boom" it had pretty good "FX" for it's time. plays on the Sony Movie channel Sunday October 22nd @ 7:40am. BOTH are excellent examples of 1950's SciFi along with Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) horror movie about alien "seed pods" taking over people's bodies while they sleep. that one SCARED the HELL out of everyone back then. as classic "must see" SciFi I rate all three of four

Baby Driver (2017) action crime film about a young getaway driver and music lover named Baby played by Ansel Elgort working for a "heist" kingpin known as Doc played by Kevin Spacey. also stars Jamie Foxx with relatively unknowns Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal, the "way cute" Lily James as Baby's love interest and the VERY foxy Eiza Gonzalez. starts off with a "bang" with an excellent car chase and as you would expect from the title their are "oodles' in the movie BUT ex for those it kind of "drags" and I found myself "paging thru" about a third of it esp early on. has LOADS of music throughout. some good, some garbage, synchronized with the action. has an I think over blown 93% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes and generally got good reviews. I used an expiring Dish-TV PPV certificate BUT I would NOT actually PAY to see it. with pretty much just mindless action and a pretty thin plot I rate it only of four. wait for HBO or another premium channel premier to watch

Cars 3 (2017) 3rd in the Disney-Pixar computer-animated auto racing themed movie series. used a Dish-TV PPV "comp" and felt it was a well used because BOTH the wife and I are HUGE Cars fans. I thought it was a thoughtful plot with an interesting "plot twist" at the end and some VERY funny scenes like the demolition derby. even thought we DID enjoy the movie I did NOT think it was as good as Cars 2 which had a LOT of "spy stuff" and really featured "Tow-mater" who is one of our favorite characters in the franchise. he is hardly in this one. as such I rate it of four BUT definitely worth the PPV for fans of the franchise
one thing that DOES aggravate me though is Disney BLOCKS recording of ANY of their PPV movies so have to watch it live if purchased which can be a PAIN in the BUTT

Life (2017) sci-fi horror film with a somewhat "Alien" style theme. basic plot is a Mars probe brings back a soil sample to the International Space Station that may have a life form in it. while studying the sample it begins to grow and turns out to not only be sentient but hungry!!! murder and mayhem soon follows as the ISS crew tries to get rid of the damn thing. started off rather slow the first half hour and I was about to "frisch" but got very interesting when the life form starts to attack. has definite elements of both Alien and Prometheus and is pretty much non-stop suspense with numerous "startle" scenes and a real "OMG" ending. runs a relatively short 95 minutes. IF you enjoyed the Alien franchise films you will like this one. has an I think under-rated 67% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. plays again on Starz-Edge Friday November 17th @ 1:15am, 7:50am & 4:15pm pacific time and I rate it of four

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) biographical war-action drama based on the early life of Desmond Doss, a "conscientious objector" pacifist combat medic who refused to carry or use a firearm or weapons of any kind. Doss became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor for service above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Okinawa. the movie was directed by Mel Gibson and stars relatively unknown Andrew Garfield as Doss. it has a well deserved 86% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. was nominated for six Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Garfield Best Film Editing. and Best Sound Editing, winning the awards for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing. it It also received Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Garfield).
I am a war-action movie fan and this one is outstanding. it is VERY well acted by a mostly "unknown" cast with extremely realistic CGI battle scenes. the first half of the movie about Doss fight to stay in the Army and gain the acceptance of his fellow soldiers is an interesting and inspiring story. that part has many elements of the 1941 Gary Cooper movie Sergeant York which is an all time personal favorite of mine. plays again on HBO channels Thursday July 27th and again on Saturday the 29th. definite "must see" for war-action movie fans or those that just enjoy an interesting well acted story. I rate it of four
I just saw this last night and thought it was great. Good write-up and recommendation.

Assassin's Creed (2016) pretty good (but rather weird) sci-fi action adventure staring Michael Fassbender, Jeremy Irons and relatively unknown French actress Marion Cotillard with Brendan Gleeson, Michael K Williams and the very sexy Ariane Labed. has pretty much non-stop action with oodles of "kung-foo" style fights. runs 115 minutes and there was NO "page thru" when I watched. has an I think insulting 18% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes which once again shows you can NOT always judge by their "standards". hell they gave a 93% "fresh" to the recently reviewed Baby Driver (2017) and that is NOT nearly as good an "action" movie as this one. plays again on HBO2 channel Saturday December 2nd @ 12:15pm, Monday the 4th @ 6:00pm and Thursday the 7th @ 5:35am all times pacifice. The Faculty (1998) have reviewed this teenage sci-fi horror movie before and STILL think it is worth a look for fans of the genre. one thing that makes it interesting is it has early film work from Elijah Wood (later Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Laura Harris (best known for playing the "Gim Reaper" Daisy Adair in the cable series Dead Like Me. she has VERY sexy nude scenes near the ending of this one) and Jon Stewart before he became famous as host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central) also the VERY sexy Famke Janssen who is never hard to look at. has a kind of a modified "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" style plot with excellent suspense, I though very good FX and some "OMG" plot twists. runs a relatively short 105 minutes. plays again on the Encore film channel Saturday December 2nd @ 9:55pm. I rate it of four
watched the Paul Muni classic The Life of Emile Zola (1937) biographical film about French author Émile Zola last night on Turner Classic Movies. covers his life with emphasis on "The Dreyfus Affair" where French Army Captain Alfred Dreyfus was wrongly convicted of being a German agent and sent of to Devils Island. Zola took up his case in his famous letter "J'accuse!" in the French press and was himself tried for libel. the movie WON the Oscar for Best Picture in 1937. stars Paul Muni as Zola (Best Actor nomination) Joseph Schildkraut as Captain Alfred Dreyfus (Best Supporting Actor winner) and Gale Sondergaard as Lucie Dreyfus (she was one of the great "beauties" of the time) with Donald Crisp as Maitre Labori, Émile Zola's lawyer, and Vladimir Sokoloff as painter Paul Cezanne, Zola's best friend
obviously it is a VERY well acted movie and excellent "courtroom drama". addresses the antisemitism of the French in that time. most critics consider this Paul Muni's greatest roll EVER even more so than than his portrayal of Louis Pasteur in The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936) for which he WON the Best Actor Oscar. Muni is also famous for playing 1930's gangster Tony Camonte in the original Scarface (1932) and in I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932) which gained him his first ever Best Actor Oscar nomination. I rate this AND the other Muni films mentioned as of four. his Scarface is especially interesting just to compare to the 1983 Al Pacino version
