"Margin Call" is probably the most under-rated movie on Finance in general, but also the best of the start of the Great Recession 10 years ago. I thought Zach Quinton did a terrific job. I know it's kind of like apples and oranges, but I liked it better than "The Big Short" which had more star power.

As always, much appreciated Rink.

The Informant! (2009) biographical "crime-comedy" about Archer Daniels Midland executive Mark Whitacre who "blew the whistle" on ADM's price fixing of of lysine, a commercial livestock feed additive, with two Japanese and two Korean bio-chemical companies back in the 1990's. the "twist" in the plot is that Whitacre had an ulterior motive for his actions and was hardly "squeaky clean" himself. Matt Damon plays Whitacre while Scott Bakula plays his FBI handler. I found it to be almost a John le Carre style spy story with all the double and triple cross in the plot. doesn't really sound funny BUT there is a LOT of humor. was pretty much a "tour de force" for Damon who received a Golden Globe Best Actor nomination. starts off a little slow but picks up the pace quickly as Whitacre gets deeper into his undercover activities. plays again on Cinemax East & West Friday September 1st @ 1:35pm & 4:35pm pacific time. I rate it of four

Rink, do you have Netflix? Would like some movie reviews from the streaming service if you have it.
"The Founder" starring Michael Keaton as Ray Kroc and Nick Offerman and John Carrol Lynch as person and Mac McDonald.
It's the fairly accurate true story of the McDonalds Corporation in which Ray really screwed the 2 brothers over franchising took effect. Great acting all-around and it's very entertaining/accurate portrayal of the story of McDonalds from the very beginning. Definitely worth watching.

One of the brothers is named D!ck but our fragile minds are too sensitive read such as horrible word as D!ck so the Covers Team is kind enough to censor it for us.
It's not like you don't have to be 21 to legally, drink, 18/19 to smoke and 21 to gamble, but none of us can apparently handle reading profane language.

Ya I can NOT figure THAT one out, Slobbasaurus. D!CK Clark, D!CK Nixon, person van Dyke, the Sci-Fi author Philip K D!CK AND D!CK'S Sporting Goods. NOTHING profane about the word D!CK when used in that context
I am pretty sure The Founder (2016) will be playing soon on one of the premium movie channels and I am looking forward to seeing it. when I was just leaning to fly in 1964 I used to hang with Ray Kroc's pilot who used to fly him around the midwest scouting restaurant sites in a Cessna 195. how he built the corporation is quite a story

watched Defying the Nazi's, Sharps' War the other night. really interesting story about these people. the documentary (at around 1:15 in length) was pretty thin but you get the point of what they did and how risky it must have been.

Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) serious drama adaption of the 1984 Pulitzer Prize and Tony award winning play of the same name with an all-star cast. It depicts two days in the lives of four real estate salesmen and how they become desperate when the corporate office sends a trainer to "motivate" them by announcing that, in one week all except the top two salesmen will be fired. anyone who has ever been in a high pressure sale job, especially phone sales, will appreciate this movie. it is a "tour de force" for both Jack Lemmon as Shelley "The Machine" Levene and Al Pacino as lead salesman and top "closer" Ricky Roma. also stars Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey and Jonathan Pryce. Jack Lemmon was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 49th Venice Film Festival and in my opinion SHOULD have had a Best Actor Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. Al Pacino was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. anyone who appreciates a well acted drama will like this movie. plays again on the FLIX channel Thursday August 31st @ 10:15am pacific time. I rate it of four as the acting is that intense
Meet Wally Sparks (1997) VERY funny yet pretty much unknown Rodney Dangerfield "screwball" comedy where he plays a sleazy tabloid-style TV talk show host, that would make Jerry Springer or the late Morton Downey Jr seem tame by comparison, trying to save his show from being cancelled. also stars Burt Reynolds, David Ogden Stiers, Cindy Williams, and Debi Mazar with "cameo's" by Gilbert Gottfried, Tony Danza, George Wallace. Lesley-Anne Down, Michael Bolton and George Hamilton along with most of the then current talk show hosts on TV at that time. Rotten Tomatoes threw rocks with only a 14% "fresh" rating BUT I thought it was hilarious and HEY, it's RODNEY who is one of my all time favorite comedians. he was at least as funny in this one as his more well known movies like Caddyshack (1980) and Back to School (1986). played the other night on the Starz channel and hopefully will repeat soon. I rate it of four

Not sure if it was mentioned .. But, FRAILTY (2001) with Bill Paxson and Matthew McConaughey. Just a father/son relationship movie about a serial killer? Or not? ..
And LeRink .... Glenngary Glen Ross was great. Read somewhere that the Baldwin scene was written just for him..
And Back to School is an absolute classic!

then you need to check out Meet Wally Sparks, MrSeanHiggs. every bit as funnyand VERY under-rated
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2(2017) sequel to the 2014 original. same Sci-Fi "superhero" fantasy-action "CGI-fest" as the first one with a somewhat more interesting plot. had good fast-paced action with some humor. stared Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel (voice of Baby Groot), Bradley Cooper (voice of Rocket Raccoon) and Michael Rooker from the original with the addittion of Kurt Russell and a "cameo" by Sylvester Stallone. used a Dish-TV PPV certificate that was about to expire and was fairly satisfied BUT I would NOT actually PAY to see it. the movie iS the typical Marvel Comics mindless action. Trade (2007) well acted intense drama about sex slave trafficking staring Kevin Kline as a NYC police detective that ends up helping a teenage Mexican boy played by Cesar Ramos try and find his kidnapped younger sister played by Paulina Gaitan. the lovely Polish actress Alicja Bachleda plays one of the trafficked women. the traffickers are all "nasty person" BUT they pretty much get theirs in the end. would NOT be surprised to see Cesar Ramos in more movies as he pretty much steals this one. played on HBO the other night and hopefully repeats soon. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a sorry 28% "fresh' which once again shows you can NOT always go by them. I thought it was a faced paced movie with pretty good suspense and I enjoyed it. the one detraction it is about half in Spanish with sub-titles which is kind of a pain BUT about half the movie is set in Mexico City so that to be expected. I rate it of four

The Accountant (2016) reviewed back in January. crime-action movie that is kind of IF John Wick was also a forensic accountant for the mob. Ben Affleck plays the title character who is also an autistic "rain man" sort of "idiot savant". not really an assassin BUT he can "take care of business" when he needs too. somewhat "twisty" convoluted plot that will keep you wondering "what's next?" and has enough fights and ordnance to keep action fans interested. I thought it was WAY more thoughtful with a more suspenseful plot than the two John Wick movies I have seen and has a "wicked weird" plot twist at the end. Anna Kendrick is way "mousy cute" as the girl accountant Affleck's character ends up working with and protecting. plays again on HBO2-East (HD) Saturday September 9th @ 10:10am and HBO-Signature Thursday the 14th @ 11:20pm and I rate it of four

Hidden Figures (2016) VERY interesting and well acted TRUE biographical drama about the black women mathematicians that worked for NASA as "computers" early on in the "Space Race" vs the Russians with emphasis on the work of Katherine Johnson playey by Taraji P. Henson, Dorothy Vaughan played by Octavia Spencer (who WON the Best Supporting Actress Oscar and Golden Globe for her roll in The Help in 2011) and Mary Jackson played by Janelle Monae. also stars Kevin Costner as Al Harrison director of the Space Task Group and Kirsten Dunst as Vivian Mitchell the white supervisor of the black women "computer group".
I thought it was a VERY inspiring story of how the black women, and esp Johnson, Vaughan and Jackson, were able to overcome the racial prejudice and segregation of the early 1960's to become NASA "super-stars" in their work. the movie received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer) who also received a Golden Globe nomination. it has a well deserved 92% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. IF you like well acted historical dramas you will enjoy this one as much as I did. plays again on HBO Thursday September 14th and again on Saturday the 16th. I rate it of four it is THAT good

Dog Day Afternoon (1975) reviewed back in July. definite "must see" for Al Pachino fans it is one of the five John Cazale films, The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter that were all nominated for Best Picture Oscars. received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture, Best Director (Sidney Lumet), Best Actor (Al Pacino), and Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination (Chris Sarandon) while both Charles Durningand John Cazale received Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe nominations. playing again on the 5-Max channel Thursday Septembers 21st @ 7:10am and Sunday the 24th @ 3:20am pacific time. Knockaround Guys (2001) interesting fairly fast paced crime drama starring Barry Pepper, Vin Diesel, Seth Green, John Malkovich and Dennis Hopper. basic plot is four young "wiseguy" sons of gangsters are given the job of retrieving a bag full of money and it all goes to hell. the plot is how the boys get the money back. it has a couple of crazy "plot twists" esp at the end. worth a look for mafia themed movie fans. playing again on HD Net Movies Thursday September 21st @ 2:30pm and repeats Friday the 22nd @ 12:10am pacific times. Alien rip off. Been many of them. For awhile I was intrigued and then I felt it went downhill and didn't like the ending.

^^^^^ thank you doggs. I almost used a PPV certificate on that one. you are correct about Alien "ripoffs" and damn "sequels" . getting to be a "bit much"
one Alien "basic plot ripoff" that I think interesting is Mimic (1997) with Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam, Josh Brolin, Charles S. Dutton and F. Murray Abraham. similar to Alien movies only with genetically engineered "judas breed" insects instead of outer space "Xenomorphs" bred to counter a NYC cockroach plague and then die off. unfortunately they do NOT die off and they are breeding and causing havoc in the Manhatten subways. same excellent suspence and "startle" scenes as the Alien movies and I gave it a when reviewed

So I use the Firestick often.. And I have to say.. Came across the gem LET IT RIDE the other day --
It is a really funny movie about horse racing/betting ...
As long as we have some Alien/Mars type movies being mentioned -
Anyone like GHOSTS FROM MARS ? John Carpenter film- I thought it was alright. Plenty of worse flicks out there. Ice Cube, Natasha Hestridge, Jason Stratham are in it.
let me roll out one that I am guessing a lot of you have never seen, or even heard of
QUICK CHANGE with Bill Murray .. From1990. Geena Davis, Randy Quaid, Jason Robarbs .. plus some bit roles from Stanley Tucci and Tony Shaloub.. Holy cow.. If you aren't laughing at some of the stuff in this thing.. Typical dry Bill Murray humor, but man, I can pop that in anytime and enjoy it.

MrSeanHiggs, Let It Ride (1989) has to be THE funniest gambling themed comedy's EVER and is an all time "gambling degenerate" CULT CLASSIC. I swear IF you go to a Las Vegas Race & Sportsbook. you will see someone like ALL the characters in the movie esp in the scene were Trotter goes to poll the crowd. GREAT cast of Richard Dreyfuss, David Johansen, Teri Garr, Jennifer Tilly, Allen Garfield and Robbie Coltrane BUT unknow actor Richard Dimitri as "Tony Cheeseburger" pretty much steals the movie as does Mary Woronov as "Quinella" the snack counter waitress. I rated it of four when ever reviewed

btw IF you liked Let It Ride, check out The Crew (2000) also with Richard Dreyfuss and Jennifer Tilly along with Burt Reynolds, Seymour Cassel, Dan Hedaya and Lainie Kazan. similar "screwball" comedy about four old retired "wise guys" trying to save their Miami Beach retirement hotel. I think I got the YouTube address "copy&paste" wrong. SHOULD be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRJ3eovuzcc
absolutely hilarious the way Trotter berates Loony (David Johansen, who was also the front man for the puck band New York Dolls in the early 1970's) in just about every scene they have together
