Check out the Road to Perdition (Rated R-2002)with Tom Hanks. Just saw a couple of hours ago. Airing on the HBO networks all this month.
Takes place in Chicago Prohibition era before Boardwalk Empire (takes place in my home state) and the corny movies that came after). I'm too phucking lazy to write an analysis but here's the IMDB.com page
I think you and the board would enjoy it. 8.5/10 for me

Road to Perdition a well acted Tom Hanks movie. you liked that one check out Miller's Crossing (1990) with Gabriel Byrne, John Turturro, Jon Polito, and Albert Finney. similar Prohibition Era "gang vs gang" movie
watched the The Magnificent Seven (2016) remake last night after the Penguins @ Predators Stanley Cup game six. was VERY surprised how entertaining it was. in many ways I thought it was even BETTER than the original. excellent opening scene that sets the tone. Peter Sarsgaard as Bart Bogue is an even worse murdering baztard than Eli Wallach as the Mexican bandit Calvera in the original and Denzel Washington as Sam Chisolm is I think even better as the Seven's leader than Yul Brynner as Chris Adams. also thought the rest of the Seven were at least as good as the original characters and Haley Bennett as young widow Emma Cullen, who's husband gets murdered by Bogue in the opening scene and hires the Seven, is VERY foxy throughout. she has a much bigger part in this version than "The Old Man" in the original. the final battle between the Seven with the town's people and Bogue's hired thugs is spectacular. playing again the week of Monday June 11th on EPIX channels. I rate it of four

reviewed The Accountant (2016) earlier in the year after watching on Dish-TV PPV. pretty good crime-action movie that is kind of IF John Wick was also a forensic accountant. Ben Affleck plays the title character. kind of a convoluted plot that is somewhat tough to follow at times BUT has excellent action and an interesting "plot twist" at the end. said at the time it was worth the PPV certificate and it is now playing on HBO East & West channels Thursday June 15th, Friday the 16th, Sunday the 18th and Monday/Tuesday the 19th/20th. I rated it of four

A Bronx Tale (1993) "gangster" themed "coming of age" drama set in the Bronx during the the 1960s that follows a young Italian-American, played by Francis Capra as the seven year old and Lillo Brancato as the teenager Calogero aka "C", growing up in The Bronx, New York as his path in life is guided by two father figures, played by Robert De Niro as his biological father, Lorenz and Chazz Palminteri as the local mafia boss, Sonny. was De Niro's directorial debut and the screen play was from Palminteri's one man stage play of the same name and based somewhat on his early life. VERY well acted by all involved it has many memorable scenes like the crap game, the race track and the bikers in the bar which make this movie worth watching. Eddie Montanaro plays the not so lovable loser "Eddie Mush" and Joe Pesci has an appearance at the end as Sonny's "over-boss" Carmine. plays again on Cinemax East & West channels again Thursday June 15 and Tuesday the 20th. also on 5-Max Sunday June 18th and Wednesday the 21st. I think most Covers degenerates will enjoy this movie. I know I sure did and I rate it of four
side note: this was Lillo Brancato's premier roll as a movie actor which he followed up the next year with a part in the Danny DeVito movie Renaissance Man BUT he got involved in heroin and later a burglary where an off-duty police officer was shot and killed. he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the burglary but is now out on parole. as the tag line in the movie goes "the saddest thing in life is wasted talent"

Paths of Glory (1957) definitely one of THE great ain't-war movies of all time with Kirk Douglas, Adolphe Menjou and George Macready. also a pretty good "courtroom drama". with the idiot generals that were depicted no wonder the French got beat by the Germans in WWII. I would say a of four
also on the other night on Turner Classic Movies Witness for the Prosecution (1957) from the Agatha Christie play staring Tyrone Power (in his last movie before his untimely death from a heart attack at age 44), Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton. also with Laughton's wife Elsa Lanchester (who played the Bride of Frankenstein in 1935), Henry Daniell (who usually played the villain and was the best of the Professor Moriarty characters in the BasilRathbone-Nigel BruceSherlock Holmes serials in the 1940's) and the great Irish "comic relief" actress Una O'Connor (also famous for her rolls in the early Frankenstein movies). is an outstanding "courtroom drama" which excellent "plot twists" throughout and esp the ending. definitely a "must see" for legal themed movie fans. I also rate it of four

The Nice Guys (2016) reviewed this CRAZY FUNNY crime-action-comedy back in April and watched it again last night. stars Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling and 16 year old Angourie Rice with bit parts by Keith David and Kim Basinger. basic plot is two competing private investigators, played by Crowe and Gosling, are hired to find a missing woman that has information potentially damaging to the "Big Three" auto companies before she gets assassinated by corporate hired killers. VERY fast paced movie with a LOT of "sight gags", old fashioned "slap stick", LOL dialog and CRAZY "plot twists". as I said before, I REALLY enjoyed this movie. one of THE funniest I have seen in ages and I laughed all the way thru it. young Angourie Rice really "steals the show" as the Gosling character's perky 13 year old daughter. carries a well deserved 92% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes (SOMETIMES they get it RIGHT) plays again on various HBO channels again on Monday June 26th, Tuesday the 27th and Friday the 30th. I rate it of four and almost went the "full four" it is THAT good. it is a movie I can watch numerous times and STILL be entertained

Morgan (2016) SciFi horror-suspense film about the making of a human clone young woman Morgan who is designed to be a weapon BUT out grows here programming and becomes sentient. has elements of the movie Splice (2009) with the "DREN" clone in that movie having a similar creation as Morgan and the same problems "fitting in". stars the lovely Anya Taylor-Joy as Morgan and Kate Mara as the corporate "nasty girl" sent to decide IF he program should be terminated after Morgan attacks one of her creators. also features Toby Jones and Paul Giamatti (two of my favorite actors. check out Giamatti in Shoot 'Em Up (2007) with Clive Owen and Jones in Infamous (2006) where he plays Truman Capote). runs a short 92 minutes and is pretty much non-stop action and suspense. has a number of "plot twists" and a "wicked wierd" (but not unexpected) ending. plays again on Cinemax channels Thursday June 28th and again Monday July 3rd. I was thoroughly entertained and rate it of four
The Birth of a Nation (2016) a "the horrors of slavery" movie based on the life of Nat Turner (played by Nate Parker) who led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831. had a rather "plodding" plot with just one abuse of slaves after another to set up the final rebellion and I thought it was just boring. I was VERY surprised to see it WON the Sundance Film Festival. for me it was strictly plays all the week of June 27th on HBO IF you want to bother

The Young Victoria (2009) historical drama about the early life of England's Queen Victoria (played by Emily Blunt) and the "political intrigue" involved in her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert (played by Rupert Friend) who the English aristocracy considered a "German outsider". Victoria had to really FIGHT to be the true Queen of England and just not a "figure head" when she was young and that makes for a fascinating story that was well acted by all involved. the wife (who just LOVES these "period pieces") and I were very entertained. plays again in the Indieplex channel Friday June 30th @ 12:25pm & 8:15pm and I rate it of four
Zathura (2005) excellent Sci-Fi fantasy adventure from the the book by Chris Van Allsburg also the author of Jumanji (1995) and this one has many of the same elements, including the "game board" that starts the adventure, with similar outstanding CGI. fast paced "kids vs bad guys in space" movie with pretty much non-stop action, has some VERY funny scenes and LOL lines with kind of a crazy "plot twist" at the end runs a relatively short 1 hour 45 minutes. I really liked it and rate it of four

The Green Mile (2005) this Tom Hanks and late Michael Clarke Duncan "tour de force" from the Stephen King novel of the same name needs NO big writeup from me. suffice to say it has an all-star cast with David Morse, Bonnie Hunt, Barry Pepper James Cromwell and Sam Rockwell. the late Michael Jeter was outstanding as death row inmate Eduard "Del" Delacroix as was Doug Hutchison as the completely vicious azzhole guard Percy Wetmore who I think should be on the API top 50 Villains list. kinda crazy that maybe THE best character in the movie is the mouse "Mr. Jingles". plays again on 5-Max channel Thursday June 29th @ 8:00pm pacific. as one of my all time favorite movies I obviously rate this of four

The Legend of Tarzan (2016) fast paced action-adventure based one the Edgar Rice Burroughs.jungle characters. stars Alexander Skarsgard in the title roll with the beautiful Margot Robbie as Jane, Samuel L. Jackson as Tarzan's "side kick" George Washington Williams and Christoph Waltz as the "bad baztard" villain Captain Leon Rom. pretty much non-stop action with lots of fights and excellent CGI. got a poor 36% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes which shows you can NOT just judge a movie from their baloney. I found it very entertaining. plays again on HBO-2 Thursday July 6th @ 9:35pm pacific time. I rate it of four
The Sum of All Fears (2002) "spy thriller" action-suspense movie somewhat based the Tom Clancy novel (the bad guys are Arab terrorists in the book and Neo-Nazi's in this movie) BUT the basic plot remains the same. stars Ben Affleck as Clancy hero Jack Ryan with Liev Schreiber as CIA operative (and hit man) John Clark, Bridget Moynahan as Ryan's fiancee Dr Cathy Muller, Morgan Freeman as CIA Director William Cabot, James Cromwell as American President J Robert Fowler and Ciaran Hinds as Russian Federation President Alexander Nemerov. it is pretty fast paced with a number of interesting "plot twists" that kept me involved throughout. has some elements of the Clancy "cold war" spy classic The Cardinal of the Kremlin which is a GREAT book. plays again on 5-Max channel Wednesday July 5th @ 10:35pm themn again on Cinemax East & West Friday the 7th @ 12:25pm & 4:25pm and Monday ther 10th @ 8:35pm & 11:35pm all times pacific. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) the Al Pacino, John Cazale, Charles Durning, Chris Sarandon and Lance Henriksen "tour de force" based on an actual Brooklyn attempted bank robbery in 1972. was nominated for five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (Sidney Lumet), Best Actor (Al Pacino), Best Supporting Actor (Chris Sarandon) and Best Film Editing and seven Golden Globes with the five Oscar nominations plus Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Charles Durning) and (John Cazale). GREAT acting by all involved it has a 95% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes so sometime they get it correct. now considered a film "classic" it was selected preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2009. plays again on the Action-Max channel Friday July 7th @ 11:55am and Monday the 10th @ 10:45am pacific time. The Rainmaker (1997} outstanding courtroom legal drama from the John Grisham novel of the same name it has an all-star cast of Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, Claire Danes, Jon Voight, Roy Scheider and Mickey Rourke. relative "unknowns" Johnny Whitworth as the doomed Donny Ray Black, Mary Kay Place as his mother Dot Black, Virginia Madsen as "whistle blower" Jackie Lemanczyk and Teresa Wright as Damon's characters elderly landlord "Miss Birdie" are ALL outstanding in their rolls. you want to know WHY the American health care system is FUKKED? WATCH this MOVIE!!!. plays again on EPIX-2 Wednesday July 5th all day starting @ 11:15am pacific. along with The Caine Mutiny (courtroom ending)(1954), Witness for the Prosecution, (1957) Inherit the Wind (1960) To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), And Justice For All (1979) and The Verdict (1982), it is one of THE great courtroom drama's of all time and as such I rate it of four. The Rainmaker was one of my favorite Grisham books. My father took me to see the movie when it came out, but I didn't appreciate it at the time because I was only 12 and in 7th grade.
Great movie indeed. One of my favorite courtroom dramas, although I thought A Time to Kill was a better book and movie.
Best courtroom movie is My Cousin Vinny. Hands down. Not a drama though, hahaha.

Slobbasaurus, other outstanding John Grisham books made into movies are:
The Client (1994) staring Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones and Brad Renfro with Anthony LaPaglia as the "bad baztard" Mafia villain. Renfro was a real "up and coming" young actor playing the 11 year old Mark Sway in this his first film and then the young Michael Sullivan (the Brad Pitt part as an adult) in Sleepers (1996) which is yet another excellent "courtroom drama" and one of my all time favorites that I can watch again and again with it's all star cast BUT he got involved with drugs as a young adult and died of a heroin overdose at the age of 25. to quote the "tag line" in A Bronx Tale (1993) "The saddest thing in life is wasted talent"
The Firm (1993) staring Tom Cruise, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Gene Hackman with Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook, David Strathairn and Wilford Brimley
The Pelican Brief (1993) staring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington with Stanley Tucci, Sam Shepard, James B. Sikking, Robert Culp and John Lithgow
all three are GREAT adaptations of Grisham's novels with excellent suspense that I rate of four

oversight on my part NOT mentioning A Time to Kill (1996} in the John Grisham novels made into movies. agree with Slobbasaurus that it is excellent BUT disagree with "better than The Rainmaker"
watched the Tom Hanks mystery-suspense action movie Inferno (2016) last night and it had me on the edge of my seat. Hanks reprises his role as symbologist Robert Langdon from The Da Vinci Code (2006) and Angels & Demons (2009). the basic plot is a crazy billionaire geneticist has developed a biological WMD to kill off half the earths population and "save the planet" from over-population. the key to the bio-agent is in a modified version of Sandro Botticelli's Map of Hell which itself is based on Dante's Inferno so Langdon is called in by the World Health Organization (WHO) to decode it BUT is kidnapped by a rival faction that wants him to work for them. he ends up in a Florence, Italy hospital where a young woman doctor, played by the lovely Felicity Jones, helps him avoid the various factions trying to get his information.
it has a putrid 19% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes which once again shows you can NOT always go by their ratings as I found it to be a VERY entertaining BUT with a somewhat convoluted plot with numerous "twists" throughout and excellent action in spots. trying to figure out WHO the "good guys and bad guys" are kept me interested. don't blink or you will miss something. plays again on Starz channels daily this next week starting Wednesday July 5th. I rate it of four

oversight on my part NOT mentioning A Time to Kill (1996} in the John Grisham novels made into movies. agree with Slobbasaurus that it is excellent BUT disagree with "better than The Rainmaker"

speaking of Sleepers (1996) it plays again on HBO-Z channel next Tuesday July 11th @ 12:20pm pacific time. hard to find a more "all-star" cast for a courtroom drama with Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Brad Pitt, Kevin Bacon, Jason Patric and Minnie Driver. Joe Perrino, the late Brad Renfro, Jonathan Tucker and Geoffrey Wigdor are all outstanding as the four friends as boys. Vittorio Gassman is excellent as the gangster King Benny as are the late Bruno Kirby as the Patric character "Shakes" father and Frank Medrano as bodega owner "Fat Mancho". this is a definite "must see" courtroom drama

Race (2016) biographical sports drama film about the great African-American athlete Jesse Owens with emphasis on his performance in the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he completely embarrassed the Nazi's "racial superiority" bullsh!t winning four gold medals. stars Stephan James as Jesse Owens, Jason Sudeikis as his coach Larry Snyder and Jeremy Irons as American IOC member Avery Brundage with William Hurt as American IOC member Jeremiah Mahoney who opposed America participating in the "Nazi Games" and Carice van Houten as German film maker Leni Riefenstahl. Barnaby Metschurat as is an excellent "nasty baztard" Joseph Goebbels as is David Kross as Owens German broad jump rival (and later good friend) Luz Long
VERY well acted movie by all involved. hard to believe the racial discrimination against BOTH black AND person*ish athletes back in those times. the person*ish sprinters Marty Glickman. played by Jeremy Ferdman, and Sam Stoller, played by Giacomo Gianniotti, gOT cut from the 4X100 meter relay by Brundage to appease Goebbels of any further "embarrassment" BUT allowing Owens to win his fourth gold medal. plays again on the 5-Max channel Sunday July 9th @ 3:15pm and again Saturday the 15th @ 1:30am. it holds an average 61% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes BUT I think much better than that and rate it of four
Imperium (2016) "spy"-suspense thriller about a mousy FBI desk agent played by Daniel "Harry Potter" Radcliffe, tasked with infiltrating a Neo-Nazi white supremacist group in a hunt for a missing radioactive agent that could be used to make a "dirty bomb" WMD. not much "slam-bang" action but following the "twists & turns" in the plot kept me interested and Radcliffe is excellent as is his FBI "handler" played by Toni Collette. played on Starz the other night and hopefully will repeat soon. runs a short 100 minutes and has a well deserved 84% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. I rate it of four. check on NetFlix or Hulu

Passengers (2016) sci-fi kind of a "love story" kind of a "space action-adventure" is ends up being a rather boring neither. not even a cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen, and Laurence Fishburne (the only four humans depicted in the film) can save this turkey and it ends up just being a boring mess despite outstanding CGI and a pretty good action scene near the end. about the first two thirds of the movie is like "WHEN is something going to HAPPEN ???" has n I think WAY too high 31% "fresh" from Rotten Tomatoes. plays again on Starz channels all next week IF you want to fool with it. for me it was complete

Movie-wise, The Rainmaker was better; no doubt it. Book-wise, A Time to Kill will always be one of my favorites along with Atlas Shrugged, Lord of the Rings (stupid Peterson movies made it really popular), and ITby Stephen King (Can't wait for the movie to come out this September).
Pelican Brief was good and The Client was highly unrealistic in my opinion (kid outsmarts everyone-come on but it was still an entertaining read and movie.
I do like Brad Renfro as a child actor. Sleepers was an excellent movie! Didn't read the book in this case but this movie wants me to read The Count of Monte Cristo.
