Mrs and I just got back from viewing Prometheus. for all the talk of it being an "Alien-Aliens prequel", it had no where near the suspense or "startle" scenes of Alien or the action of Aliens.
OK SciFi story and excellent CGI BUT the Mrs and I were disappointed and I'm a HUGE Ridley Scott SciFi fan

watched La Femme Nikita (1990) (in French with subtitles)sandwiched in between the 1994 Leon (aka The Professional in the US) on the Sony Movie HD Channel. the basic plot is a young girl, "Nikita" murders a police man during a drug robbery when she is strung out. sentenced to life in prison, the French Intell people known as "The Centre" fake her death and turn her into an a assassin.
the movie is kind of like rush hour traffic. moves very fast then slows to a crawl then moves very fast again. best part is where "Josephine" (Nikita's code name) works with a "cleaner" assassin named "Victor" played by Jean Reno who later stared in The Professional. their characters are almost identical and probably lead to Reno playing Leon.
it's for sure NOT The Professional or the 1985 Jack Nicholson, Kathleen Turner, Anjelica Huston Prizzi's Honor BUT I think it's worth watching IF you like the "secret agent" or "hit man killing bad guys" genre. French with subtitles is kind of a pain in the ass, though and it's got a kind of wierd "she just disappears" ending.
overall I would say

The Perfect Gateaway And I will have to say I was actually surprised with the twist 3/4 of the way though
From Paris with Love John Travolta is a bad ass with a shaved head. I thought the plot was a little far fetched at the end, buit I could watch nevertheless

Watched the 2nd Sherlock Holmes movie tonight. I liked the first one a lot. This one I thought was good enough to recommend but kinda boring.
Where was the mystery that needed to be solved?
This was more like a James Bond movie set in the 1890's. Recognize the bad guy and what he's up to, and then go about blowing some shit up while trying to stop him.

watched three "oldies but goodies" last night.....
Enemy At The Gates (2001) was on the Fox Movie Channel. it'sone of my top five war films of all time mostly because it's about the Battle of Stalingrad and specifically the "sniper duel" between the Russian Vasily Zaitsev (Jude Law), and the German Erwin König (Ed Harris).
also stars Joseph Fiennes as Zaitsev's political mentor, propaganda commissar Danilov, and Rachel Weisz as Tania, Zaitsev's fellow sniper and love interest. Bob Hoskins is excellent as Nikita Khrushchev (he looks just like the guy) and Ron Perlman plays Zaitsev's early sniper partner and tactics teacher Koulikov.
GREAT historical movie about "The Great Patriotic War" which really isn't covered that much in Western films. very well acted and produced.
MGM-HD Movie Channel had the 1973 Robert Blake "cult" movie Electra Glide in Blue which is kind of a motorcycle cop "Easy Rider". very well acted by all involved including Billy Green Bush as Blake's motorcycle partner Zipper. Mitchell Ryan as the arrogant police captain Harve Poole, Royal Dano as the Coroner and Elisha Cook as the crazy old desert rat Willie. Jeannine Riley as the bar maid Jolene was VERY tasty in her day.
MGM-HD also had the original 1972 Charles Bronson and Jan-Michael Vincent The Mechanic which I personally think is MUCH better than the 2011 Jason Statham and Ben Foster remake. definately worth watching IF you have never seen it just for comparison.

most people in the west don't understand just how vicious the German-Russian battles of WWII were. it was your basic "war of annihilation" on both sides. the Germans called the fighting at Stalingrad "Rattenkrieg" (Rat War) because of the close in fighting. was down right Medieval only with modern weapons

watched There Be Dragons (2011) last night and it was the longest 2 hours I have spent in a long time. was NOT at ALL what I expected when I recorded it. with the Opus Dei connection, I thought it might be like The Da Vinci Code. instead it was a stupid Spanish Civil War era "revenge" movie with a really halfassed "jumping back and forth thru history" plot.
complete waste of time
one thing that WAS apparent from the history in movie is that IF the Soviet Bolshevik backed Republicans were murdering Catholic Priests and Nuns wholesale during the war, then they were bound to LOSE in the most religiously Catholic country in Europe.

watched the 1999 re-make of the John Cassavetes-Gena Rowlands "cult classic" Gloria with Sharon Stone in the title roll. plot still was kind of "plodding" but at least the character of the kid played by Jean-Luke Figueroa is less the annoying whiny little bitch than John Adames was in the original. one positive for the movie is they expanded the roll of the mob boss "Ruby" for George C Scott which was his last feature film before his death from a heart attack in September of 1999.
was better acted than the original asnd had a couple of good chase scenes BUT it's still NOT nearly as good as similar "strong adult protecting a vulnerable child from the bad guys" movies like the 1994 Jean Reno-Natalie Portman classic The Professional (aka Leon)
btw, BOTH Jean Reno movies where he plays a ""cleaner" (hitman), The Professional and his 1990 La Femme Nikita (although Reno's character "Victor" is a smaller role near the end),are on the Sony Movie HD Channel this weekend running back-to-back twice saturday june 30th starting @ 7:00 pm pacific time. I like the presentation on Sony because, like on Turner Classic Movies, they are usually shown in "letterbox" in the original 1:2 aspect rather than a 9:16 "HD cut"
also for fans of Guy Ritchie directed Jason Statham "gangster" movies, the 1998 Lock, Stockand Two Smoking Barrels is on STARZ saturday june 30th @ 10:30 pm pacific and repeats sunday @ 6:50 pm pacific.
