This conversation can't go on without mentioning Eddie Van Halen. That first album of theirs is still such a thrill. He took what Hendrix did in the 60's and improved upon it for the 70's/80's. Maybe not as technically proficient as some others, but a ground breaker of sound nonetheless. 

Honorable mention to Tom Scholz of Boston for creating a new sound with a Les Paul guitar and a Rockman amp that remains unique and listenable to this day.

Many of the greats are mentioned above... I will mention a few that are some of my personal favorites

Gary Richrath (REO Speedwagon)
Kenny Wayne Sheppard

KWS still tours and usually small venues.  I have seen him maybe 5 times, and it is ALWAYS well worth your time and money if you love a great guitarist.  Find him at a local club near you sometime... you can thank me later.

If you really like good guitar work and are not familiar with Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton i would strongly urge ya to do so

 Biscuit is 100% correct. Danny Gatton was an amazing player ,but never received much credit outside the D.C area.
 Roy Buchanan was wonderful too ,but never got his due. Any coincidence that both of those guys killed themselves?

Sportsfan, I place Kenny Wayne very high also what a great guitarist. I have never seen hum live and will be on the look out.

 I love Rory ! He was so great ,but got no love here in the States.
 It took me a few years ,but I finally collected all four of the Taste Albums ( Rory's 1st band ) on vinyl.
